Athlonga (아스론가) is a Western-style restaurant and wine bar on the 3rd floor of a building near Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, with a rooftop that is also open. Before sunset, the writer sat at an Athlonga window seat watching the sky change while eating prosciutto pasta and a chuck flap steak, and once the sun went down, staff lit a candle on every table, which made the mood even better. Athlonga is a recommended pick for a Dongdaemun DDP date or blind date when you want both good food and atmosphere.

Izawa Yeouido Direct Store is a gyukatsu (beef cutlet) restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building, a 3-minute walk from Yeouido Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. On a rainy weekday, the writer arrived at 6:30 pm straight from work, had no wait, ordered a gyukatsu set, a steki set and a drink set, and grilled the beef on a personal brazier. Danppang Bakery (단빵제빵소) is a bakery inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, that sells four kinds of garlic bread. After the owner's explanation and a tasting, the writer bought two 14,000 won 4-flavor sets, one to eat during the trip and one for a family of four to share at home. Danyang market fried chicken: a spice wimp picks black garlic Double

Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a dakgangjeong (sweet-glazed Korean fried chicken) shop in Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, with the longest line in the market, and customers can sample the Original and Black Garlic Double flavors before choosing. After tasting both, the writer picked the Black Garlic Double, a little spicier than Shin Ramyun, and added a 2-bottle black garlic makgeolli set made in collaboration with Daegang Makgeolli for 10,000 won. Verdict: Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a must-eat on any Danyang trip, sweet and spicy enough even for spice wimps, with crunchy nurungji (scorched rice) as the kicker.

Sindang chicken restaurant with parents: 3 dipping sauces, Gyeryugwan

Gyeryugwan (계류관) is a wood-fired chicken restaurant and pub near Sindang Station and Jungang Market in Jung-gu, Seoul. Our group of four, including my parents, ordered the oak-fired neungi mushroom chicken (₩23,000), mixed chicken jeon (savory pancakes, ₩25,000), chicken neck tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour fritters, ₩15,000) and meat doenjang makguksu (buckwheat noodles, ₩13,000). The three sauces (spicy roe, doenjang and cream) and the shrimp-stuffed pepper jeon stood out most. Gyeryugwan's dishes taste even better eaten together, so it suits both a family dinner and a second round of drinks.

Yukrab Jongno is a beef and lamb Korean BBQ restaurant on the 3rd floor of a building, a 3-minute walk from Jonggak Station in Jongno, Seoul. Two women ordered the 2-person Yukrab set (₩67,000) and grilled jingalbisal (beef rib finger meat), toshisal (hanger steak) and lamb chops in that order with highballs; the jingalbisal was the best, and the many sauces and seasonings kept the meal from getting heavy. With a spacious dining room and private rooms for 4 to 11 people, Yukrab Jongno is a solid pick for a group dinner near Jonggak Station.

Pocheon pasta restaurant for a family outing with parents: From Italy

From Italy is a European-style Italian restaurant in Soheul-eup, Pocheon, near Gwangneung Arboretum and Gomori Reservoir. On a family outing, the writer's family sat by the 2nd-floor garden-view windows and ordered zucca dolce (₩37,000), a blueberry and pepperoni half-and-half pizza (₩34,000), scallop basil risotto and vongole (₩28,000 each) and ades, and everyone, parents included, was happy from the 14-hour aged bread onward. Verdict: the family's top pick at From Italy was the zucca dolce, and the blueberry pizza is the reason to go back.

Pocheon lake-view café, ssanghwacha & berry matcha: Geurine Oasis

Geurine Oasis is a large bakery café overlooking Gomori Lake at 442 Jugyeopsan-ro, Soheul-eup, Pocheon, Gyeonggi. On a hot day with their parents, the writer sat in the main building of Geurine Oasis and tried a strawberry matcha latte, black sesame latte, vanilla bean latte, ssanghwacha (traditional Korean herbal tea) and salt bread, with drinks at 8,000–8,500 won, then looked around the dog-friendly outdoor area and fire pit. With its roomy space, lake view and the best salt bread the writer had eaten in a while, Geurine Oasis earns five stars as a Pocheon café.

Kuu Kuu Nowon Branch is a sushi buffet on the 6th floor of 247 Nowon-ro in Nowon, Seoul, with a spacious dining room and high chairs that make it a regular pick for family and group gatherings in Nowon. The writer visits regularly for the sushi, the soy-marinated crab and sashimi corner, Western, Chinese and Korean dishes, 12 desserts and bead ice cream, plus unlimited beer for ₩5,900, and liked the consistently clean dining room most of all.
