Dongtan jjamppong spot: shell-free cockles, no soggy noodles, Bultina
In short
Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Korean-Chinese restaurant specializing in cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) at Dongtan Namgwangjang in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the original-flavor cockle jjamppong and jajangmyeon (black bean noodles), and because the cockles come as shell-free meat, there is no picking out shells while the noodles go soggy. I'd heard there's a hugely famous jjamppong place in Dongtan, so I went to Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch (불티나꼬막짬뽕 동탄남광장점). It's especially known for its spicy jjamppong, great for curing a hangover.
Location, parking and waiting at Bultina Dongtan Namgwangjang

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is near Dongtan Namgwangjang.

There's a public parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so parking is fairly easy.

When there's a wait, you can use Catch Table (a reservation and waiting app), so you don't have to just stand outside waiting. Also, jjamppong and jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) are quick meals, so even when it's busy the turnover is fast! If you slightly avoid peak time, I think you won't wait that long.
Interior, seating and how to order

Inside Bultina Dongtan Namgwangjang there are quite a lot of tables,

and there were also solo seats, good if you're dining alone.

Every table has a kiosk, so you can order right away without calling a staff member, which was handy. The menu has the signature cockle jjamppong plus cockle jjamppong rice, jajangmyeon, tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), fried dumplings and other dishes that work well at a Chinese restaurant. You can also choose the spice level of the cockle jjamppong, so it seems good for people who don't handle spicy food well! That day we ordered the original-flavor cockle jjamppong plus jajangmyeon.

Review event and self bar
If you visit, check the review event too. When I went, writing a review got you fried dumplings, which go perfectly with jjamppong and jajangmyeon.

There's a self bar where you can grab extra side dishes, and a plus: many of the side dishes use domestic ingredients!

Disposable aprons are also placed around the restaurant, which was nice.

Each table has soy sauce, chili powder and vinegar.

Original-flavor cockle jjamppong: how is it as a hangover jjamppong?

The original-flavor cockle jjamppong at Bultina isn't just blindly spicy; you get the kick and the clean, refreshing seafood flavor together. The cockle jjamppong is finally here! Red broth packed with seafood, it looks spicy at a glance, right? I'd recommend it to anyone hunting for a Dongtan hangover jjamppong the morning after drinking.

Why shell-free cockles are so good
And Bultina's real strength!! The cockles all come as meat only, no shells. When you order seafood jjamppong, it's usually loaded with mussels and clams, and at first it looks generous... but as you eat you're scrambling between shelling and eating noodles, haha.

While you're busily picking out clam meat, the noodles soak up a ton of broth and go soggy. But at Bultina the cockles come shell-free, ready to eat, so

you just pick up noodles and cockles together and you're done! Not having noodles go soggy while shelling was genuinely great. And it's not just a few cockles; they keep turning up as you eat, so the chew was great and they went really well with the spicy broth. I get why the name is literally 'cockle jjamppong'. The noodles blend well with the broth, and picking up the cockles in the same bite gives a good texture, and the broth is the kind where your spoon keeps going back!

It's great for when the weather turns chilly like now, but I have a feeling it would be even better the day after a night of drinking, as a hangover fix~
Jajangmyeon and the jjamjja combo

The jajangmyeon at Bultina had sauce that clung to the noodles and mixed smoothly. I'm always a jjamppong person and my husband is always team jajang. One bite of jjamppong, one bite of jajangmyeon, the jjamjja combo (jjamppong plus jajang), never fails!!

After the spicy cockle jjamppong, a bite of sweet jajangmyeon neutralizes your mouth, so I was glad we ordered both. Add the fried dumplings from the review event and it's a pretty filling meal even for two!
Verdict: is Bultina Dongtan Namgwangjang worth a visit?

I'd been curious because people said it's such a famous jjamppong place in Dongtan, and after eating there I could see why. I like seafood jjamppong but find shelling every clam a hassle, so the cockle meat arriving already prepped was what I liked most. Being able to slurp right away before the noodles go soggy, without spending time on shells, was satisfying enough, haha.
With its spicy broth and generous cockles, I think it's worth a visit if you're looking for a Dongtan jjamppong restaurant or a Dongtan Namgwangjang restaurant, or if you're craving a proper hangover jjamppong the morning after drinking. Next time I'd like to try the jjamppong rice and tangsuyuk too!
