Whenever I get a craving for meat in Wolpyeong-dong, one place keeps coming to mind: Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch.
Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch
It's near my place, so I'd been a few times before. Usually I just kept it simple and had gukbap — the sundae gukbap and suyuk gukbap here are seriously good — but I'd heard the samgyeopsal was legit too, so I went back. This time it's all about the meat! Can't resist meat, honestly.

Inside Ssangdung Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch: the room and the self-serve bar
Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch has a big, spacious layout with lots of tables. The moment I walked in, I saw the wide open space and rows of tables, and since it was a weekend evening, there were plenty of families around.

You can freely grab vegetables and side dishes yourself, no need to be shy about it. The self-serve bar had everything from assorted vegetables to napa cabbage kimchi and scallion kimchi!! Man, grilled scallion kimchi is the best... that moment made me mentally prepare myself to really go for it today.

How big is the stone plate at Ssangdung?
The stone plate at Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch is a size that just doesn't compare to other restaurants. Each setting had neatly arranged tableware, and the stone plate stood out too. Tofu was already lined up neatly, waiting to be grilled...

Ordering samgyeopsal for three and kkodeulsal for one
We ordered three servings of samgyeopsal and one of kkodeulsal. The pork belly and crunchy neck meat came out sliced thick. Personally I love it cut this thick — the juices come through more and it feels more tender.

The plate was so big we could grill tofu, scallion, mushroom and kimchi alongside the meat all at once. No hassle of grilling everything separately — cooking it all on one plate was way more convenient. There was even enough room to fit two stews on it!

Scallion salad, house sauce and minari wraps
The scallion salad eaten with the meat, along with the special sauce mixed with chili and garlic, made a perfect combo that kept the meat from getting heavy. One dip into that special sauce and my appetite, which had wandered off, instantly came right back.
Samgyeopsal off the stone plate!!! Once you've tried it, it keeps coming to mind regularly.

Samgyeopsal eaten with minari (water dropwort). The real highlight of this place's pork belly is the minari. Roll the meat up with fragrant minari and all the greasiness disappears, leaving just the aroma. I never expected meat and minari to pair this well. I kept reaching for more, bite after bite. Just pile lettuce with minari, scallion salad, and meat dipped generously in the special sauce — and that's it, done.

The tofu, kimchi and mushroom soaked in meat fat were secretly the real drinking-companion food. Tofu and kimchi too! It was surprising how satisfying a meal you could get out of just one stone plate.

Free with a meat order: Han River ramyeon, sundae and patbingsu
(Note!!) At Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch, ordering meat comes with free Han River ramyeon, sundae, and even patbingsu. Don't miss it.

The free ramyeon. Ramyeon and meat together... need I say more. Mid-meat, a bite of spicy broth and you feel completely reset. This is the kind of place that makes you say the owner is generous. Just ask when you're ready and they'll bring it out.
Sundae free on top of the meat too??! Owner... aren't you giving away too much... now I'm the one worried about you, haha.
And of course the meal wraps up with fried rice. Once you've finished the meat, finishing with fried rice is basically the rule. They put in plenty of egg too. And that wasn't even the end...
On top of that, the free patbingsu rounded out a perfect meal. From samgyeopsal to ramyeon, fried rice and dessert, it felt like a full course. This is good enough to call the ultimate meal.

Where to park near Ssangdung in Wolpyeong-dong
Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch sits right next to the Statistics Korea building, so it's best to park there or in the alley in front of the restaurant! From thick samgyeopsal wrapped in minari to the vegetables grilled alongside it on the stone plate, and on to the free Han River ramyeon and patbingsu, this was a genuinely satisfying spread. If you're looking for a samgyeopsal spot in Wolpyeong-dong, I highly recommend Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch!
