Jongno 3-ga bakery, husband's go-to: walnut & coffee buns, Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a bakery with a hanok (traditional Korean house) exterior on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno, Seoul, between Ikseon-dong and Jongno 3-ga. The writer had only known Munhwa Bakery through the onion bagels her husband brought home. On her first visit, she picked four breads: a coffee bun (5,800 won), a walnut bun (3,500 won), garlic bread (6,800 won) and a maple cream cheese bun (4,900 won). Verdict: the soft coffee bun and the walnut-packed walnut bun were the standouts.

I finally visited Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) in Jongno 3-ga, a bakery said to be one of Seoul's top three. I stopped by as part of a date around Ikseon-dong.

Why I finally visited Munhwa Bakery, where my husband used to buy onion bagels
Munhwa Bakery is the bakery my husband would often buy onion bagels from whenever he went to Jongno 3-ga. I'm a total bread lover! Yet even though I love eating bread more than anyone, buying it was always my husband's job. Every time I ate it, I thought I really wanted to go to the shop myself!
And at last I made it to Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong! I went with high hopes, and the shop was even prettier than I expected, and the variety of breads made just browsing fun. Today I'll share the four breads I picked out myself, with honest taste reviews.

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what are its hours?
Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 1st floor, and at the time of my visit it was open daily 11:00-20:00. It's a nice bakery to drop into when you're visiting Ikseon-dong and Jongno 3-ga.
I already knew the place because my husband kept bringing home onion bagels, but it was my first time going in person, so I was extra excited. If you're on an Ikseon-dong date or hunting for good food in Jongno 3-ga, it would make a good bread-shopping stop.

By the way, when I visited, the shop let in two groups at a time!
Munhwa Bakery exterior and interior: hanok charm with trendy breads
The exterior looks like a hanok (traditional Korean house), so it had that distinctive Ikseon-dong atmosphere.

But once I stepped inside, it had a different charm from the outside. Everything from familiar breads to quirky ones was on display, and it was a treat for the eyes the whole time I browsed.

Munhwa Bakery menu and prices: what I chose
The four breads I chose at Munhwa Bakery that day were the coffee bun (₩5,800), walnut bun (₩3,500), garlic bread (₩6,800) and maple cream cheese bun (₩4,900). There were so many kinds that I agonized for ages! Injeolmi (rice cake) bun, peanut bun, mugwort rice cake bun, sweet potato bun, white bean paste bun, walnut bun and more. I liked that you can tell what's inside just from the names.
I went around lunchtime, and the injeolmi bun was already sold out! If you want the popular breads, it might be best to go a bit earlier.
- Coffee bun ₩5,800
- Walnut bun ₩3,500
- Garlic bread ₩6,800
- Maple cream cheese bun ₩4,900
Everything looked good so it wasn't easy to choose, but I went with ingredients I usually like and signature items I'd been curious about.

Munhwa Bakery takeout and visiting tips: read before you go
At Munhwa Bakery, they packed the bread right away once I chose, and the owner's hands were so fast!

- Popular items can sell out!
- When I visited, two groups could enter at a time.
- Pick several kinds and share them to find the breads that suit your taste.

Munhwa Bakery coffee bun: recommended if you like soft cream buns
The Munhwa Bakery coffee bun (₩5,800) is one of the breads I'd personally recommend most. It's the kind of cream bun I love, and you can think of it as the coffee version. The bread is really soft, and the coffee cream inside goes well with it.

The cream doesn't feel overwhelming; the ratio of bread to cream is just right, so it's easy to eat. A soft texture with a gentle coffee flavor, so I think coffee lovers will be happy with it. Personally, it's one I'd buy again!

Munhwa Bakery walnut bun: satisfying if you love walnuts
The Munhwa Bakery walnut bun (₩3,500) was a welcome find for me, since I love walnuts.

Taking a bite, I was happy to find more walnuts inside than I expected. The nutty crunch makes eating it fun, and the more you chew, the more plain and nutty it tastes.

It's not just a few walnuts; you really get to enjoy that walnut richness, so I'd recommend it to nut lovers.

Munhwa Bakery garlic bread: is there a reason it's the signature item?
The Munhwa Bakery garlic bread (₩6,800) is listed as a signature item on Naver Place (Korea's map and review platform), so I really wanted to try it. Having eaten it, I see why. The garlic flavor whets the appetite, and the savory-sweet combination made it the kind you keep reaching for.

If you like garlic bread, it's worth trying once. On a first visit to Munhwa Bakery, starting with the signature item is a good idea.

Munhwa Bakery maple cream cheese bun: even more appealing for being mild
The Munhwa Bakery maple cream cheese bun (₩4,900) looks a bit like hotteok (a filled sweet Korean pancake), which was fun. Actually eating it, it was milder than I expected. The cream cheese inside anchors the flavor, so it's easy to eat without feeling heavy.

The sweetness of maple and the soft taste of cream cheese blend into something a little different. If you prefer mild breads to ones that are just sweet, I think you'd enjoy it.
Looking for a bakery in Ikseon-dong? How about Munhwa Bakery
I first got to know Munhwa Bakery through the onion bagels my husband often brought home. This time I was glad to visit in person and pick out a variety of breads. The hanok-style exterior is charming, and inside there's a range of distinctive breads, so browsing is fun too.

Personally, I especially liked the soft coffee bun and the walnut bun with its generous walnuts. I also got to satisfy my curiosity about the signature garlic bread. If you're looking for a great bakery in Ikseon-dong or Jongno 3-ga, put Munhwa Bakery on your list.
Next time I want to taste the onion bagel my husband so often brought home, this time myself. If you like bread, it's worth a stop at least once!
