Jonggak Station Korean BBQ: garlic short ribs on bibim guksu, Yukrab

In short

Yukrab Jongno is a beef short rib restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Jonggak Station Exit 4, with a black-toned interior divided into private rooms. At Yukrab Jongno we ordered the garlic beef short ribs, dipped them in a yellow spice powder, and ate them piled on top of bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles). The verdict: Yukrab Jongno's garlic short ribs are tender with no sinew, and the mild marinade never gets tiring to the last bite.

Today's post is about Yukrab Jongno, where I went for meat near Jonggak. There are so many companies around Jonggak, so there's no shortage of dinner spots or good restaurants, but finding a beef place with a nice atmosphere on top of good food can be surprisingly tricky. The moment I walked into Yukrab, the vibe was totally different from a typical beef restaurant, so my first impression was already great.

The meat was delicious, but since it's set up with private rooms, it seemed like a solid choice for a date, a family dinner, or even a company dinner. Especially since the meat was so tender that we kept saying it was delicious the whole time, let me introduce it.

Yukrab Jongno location: how far from Jonggak Station

Yukrab Jongno is located on the 3rd floor of 42 Ujeongguk-ro 2-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. It's about 188m from Jonggak Station Exit 4, so it's really close if you take the subway.

About a 2-minute walk from Exit 4, so it's convenient to set as a meeting spot. If you're looking for a beef restaurant or a company dinner spot near Jonggak Station, the accessibility is really good.

🖤 The atmosphere felt so upscale the moment we walked in

The first thing I felt walking into Yukrab was

Is this really a beef restaurant?

— that's how upscale the atmosphere was. It's mostly done in black, giving off a clean, calm feeling, and the warm lighting scattered throughout kept it from feeling too dark or stuffy. If anything, the lighting became a highlight against the black interior, making the whole place look even more upscale.

On one side, bottles are lined up in a row, lit up too, giving that corner some atmosphere as well.

What I liked most was that the space is divided into private rooms! At a lot of beef restaurants, the next table is so close it's uncomfortable to talk, but here you get an independent space to eat comfortably.

It seemed great for a couple wanting to talk quietly over a meal, for a family dinner with parents, or for a group gathering or company dinner. So if you're looking for a good beef restaurant near Jonggak Station and care about atmosphere as much as taste, I think you'll be satisfied here.

The basic banchan came out neat and clean too

Once we sat down, they set up the basic banchan (side dishes) first. From kimchi to a variety of vegetable side dishes, there was a good range, and overall nothing was too strong-flavored, so it was good to pair with the meat throughout the meal.

There were also sauces, salt, and several kinds of powder set aside for dipping the meat. At a lot of beef restaurants you end up just eating salt or ssamjang the whole time, but here you could mix and match, so even the same meat could taste a little different each time.

🥩 The garlic beef short ribs we ordered

And finally, the garlic beef short ribs arrived! Along with the meat came grillable vegetables like onion, paprika, mushroom, and sweet pumpkin. The meat looked amazing just visually, but once we tried it, it tasted even better than it looked.

The most important thing for me with beef short ribs is whether it's tender and not chewy, and here, from the first bite, it felt tender right away. With short ribs, if you're unlucky, the tendons can make it chewy as you keep chewing. But Yukrab's garlic short ribs had almost none of that — it just got more tender the more you chewed.

That said, it wasn't overly mushy either — the surface was grilled just enough to be slightly nutty, while the inside kept its juices. With each bite the juices came out and you could really taste that distinct savory beef flavor.

Since it's called garlic beef short ribs, I expected either a strong garlic flavor or something like sweet marinated galbi, but it didn't cover up the natural flavor of the meat as much as I thought. The seasoning wasn't overly strong, so no matter how many pieces I ate, I never got tired of it, and my chopsticks naturally kept going back for more haha.

⭐ A powder combo I really want to recommend

And here's the method I really enjoyed! Among the powders served, there was a yellow spice that looked like curry powder, so I tried dipping the meat in it lightly.

But... this combo was surprisingly delicious. At first I wasn't sure if dipping meat in curry-like powder would even work, but once I tried it, the meat's rich, savory fattiness and the spice's aroma matched surprisingly well.

Rather than coating it heavily, just a light dab on one side of the meat tasted the best. The meat's juices and savory flavor came through first, then the spice aroma rose up afterward — a completely different flavor from the usual salt or ssamjang combo!

I tried it with salt too, and with other sauces, but personally, dipping it in this yellow powder was so good I kept thinking about it afterward. The meat itself is delicious enough that even just a light dip in salt tastes great, and mixing in different powders along the way meant I never got bored, all the way through.

🍜 And you must eat the bibim guksu + short ribs together

The meat alone was already delicious, but eating it with bibim guksu (spicy cold mixed noodles) took it up another level. I put a piece of freshly grilled, warm short rib onto the cold, spicy-tangy noodles and ate them together... honestly, this combo speaks for itself haha.

Since the short ribs are tender and juicy, eating them continuously can start to feel a bit heavy, but eating bibim guksu alongside cleared my palate completely. The tangy, spicy sauce of the noodles cut through the richness of the meat and actually brought out the meat's flavor even more.

Especially when you pick up the noodles and meat together in one bite, at first you get the cool, tangy flavor of the bibim guksu, and as you chew, the short rib juices mix in and the savory flavor rises up. Warm meat + cold bibim guksu — the combo is seriously amazing.

Rather than eating a piece of meat and then a bite of noodles separately, I'd recommend just putting the meat right on top of the bibim guksu and eating them together. It stayed light all the way to the end, so even when I was full, my chopsticks kept going.

The short ribs themselves were delicious, but personally, the combo dipped in spice powder and the combo wrapped with bibim guksu are what stuck with me most.

If you're looking for a beef restaurant with a good atmosphere near Jongno

I used to think a beef restaurant just needed to taste good, but having a great atmosphere too made the whole meal so much more comfortable. Yukrab Jongno, with its upscale black interior and private-room layout, was great for eating privately, and above all, the garlic beef short ribs were really tender and delicious, so I was satisfied.

Especially compared to a typical beef restaurant, the atmosphere here is calmer and more upscale, so it seems like a good fit all around — for a date, a family dinner, a gathering, or a company dinner. If you have plans near Jongno and are looking for a good beef restaurant near Jonggak Station with a nice atmosphere, I think it's worth a visit.

Next time I come, I want to order the garlic beef short ribs again. And the bibim guksu too, no question! I really recommend the meat and bibim guksu combo haha.
