Jeju Airport black pork BBQ where staff brought a hair tie: Pork80

Pork80 Jeju Airport Branch is a charcoal-grill restaurant in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City, specializing in Nanchuk Matdon, a Jeju black pork breed. On the last day of our trip with our 8-year-old, we ordered the Nanchuk Matdon 600g plate for ₩72,000 and had the staff grill it for us, and a staff member who noticed long hair brought over a hair tie without being asked. Even if salty meljeot (Jeju fermented anchovy sauce) isn't for you, Pork80's meljorim (braised anchovy sauce) is worth mixing into rice and eating by the spoonful.

Jeju chicken pub for family dinner with a kid: Texas Dumari, Yeondong

Texas Dumari Chicken Yeondong-jeom (텍사스두마리치킨 연동점) is a large chicken-and-beer pub on the 2nd floor at 62 Noyeon-ro in Yeondong, Jeju City. On a family trip, a parent and an 8-year-old ordered crispy boneless chicken and a whole Texas Original chicken for dinner, toasting with cola instead of beer; the coating was just the right thickness and the meat was soft and tender. Texas Dumari Chicken Yeondong-jeom is a good place for families staying at a downtown Jeju hotel to end the day with crispy fried chicken.

Jeju Dongmun Market oranda shop: last-night bulk buy for both parents

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a traditional Korean snack shop inside Jeju's Dongmun Market, where young bakers make the sweets themselves. On the last night of a Jeju trip, the writer tried samples and bought oranda (puffed-rice snack clusters) for both sets of parents, plus a donut oranda her child picked. The oranda was softer and moister than the usual kind, so older relatives could eat it easily. If you plan to share, the 10,000-won bulk bag is better value than the 23,000-won oranda gift set.

Ayang-ro Daegu Chinese restaurant: mini tangsuyuk at Machai Jjamppong

Machai Jjamppong Sinam Branch is a Chinese restaurant on Ayang-ro in Dong-gu, Daegu, where a married couple ordered machai jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) for 9,500 won and mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) for 13,000 won. The jjamppong broth was dark and thick rather than clear, so the husband, who usually swears off carbs, added a bowl of rice and mixed it in, while the mini tangsuyuk came with thin batter over chunky cuts of pork. Machai Jjamppong Sinam Branch is worth a visit on a day you want one deep, fiery bowl of jjamppong.
