Jung-gu Chinese restaurant for a lunch-discount meal for two: Huhugwan

Huhugwan is a second-floor Chinese restaurant on Seosomun-ro in Jung-gu, Seoul, a short walk from Exit 10 of City Hall Station. On a half-day off, we booked a table for 3:30pm and ordered the eggplant rice bowl, mala fried rice and a small lunch-discount yurinchi (crispy fried chicken with sauce), plus a complimentary egg soup. Two adults were plenty full with two mains and one small yurinchi, and the eggplant rice bowl at Huhugwan was good enough to win over even people who dislike eggplant.

Noon bakery run in Ikseon-dong: garlic bread cut to go, Munhwa Bakery

Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery near Ikseon-dong and Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul. Stopping by around noon after lunch, the writer bought garlic bread for 6,800 won and rice-chestnut loaf for 5,800 won, and staff sliced the bread on request so it could be eaten right on the street. The garlic bread is packed with so much garlic cream that two people finished it in three minutes — buy two.

City Hall ramen restaurant with spicy mini donburi for two: Mentsuru

Mentsuru City Hall Branch is a ramen restaurant on Seosomun-ro 11-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul, specialising in haejang ramen (해장라멘), the Korean hangover-cure bowl. Two friends met after work and shared a mini donburi (4,000 won, plus 500 won to make it spicy), a spicy shoyu haejang ramen with one added egg, and a spicy tonkotsu ramen. At Mentsuru City Hall Branch the spicy shoyu is the pick for a clean, sharp broth and the spicy tonkotsu for a heavy, rich one.
