Munhwa Bakery — said to be one of Seoul's top three bakeries.ᐟ It happened to be not far from my brother's office, so after lunch together we headed to Munhwa Bakery for dessert bread.

Visiting Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what time to go?

Munhwa Bakery isn't far from Jongno 3-ga Station, so it was easy to find .ᐟ We visited around noon after lunch. It wasn't long after opening, but people kept streaming in — this really is a famous bakery in Ikseon-dong .ᐟ

Customers keep arriving at Munhwa Bakery's entrance

Plenty of Korean customers, but apparently it's especially popular with foreign visitors and tourists, so it's always busy — a real bakery-pilgrimage spot. Signature items can sell out by late afternoon or evening, so I'd recommend visiting soon after opening .ᐟ.ᐟ.ᐟ.ᐟ (opens at 11am)

How you order at Munhwa Bakery, and what we bought

Right when you walk into Munhwa Bakery, the breads are lined up on display — but it's not a self-pick system. You tell them what you want and staff pack it for you. Their signature items are said to be the garlic bread, coffee bread, and onion bagel. My brother and I are garlic bread fanatics, so we got that plus a rice-chestnut loaf for breakfast.

Onion bagel, ₩6,000. It was a good size and looked crisp like real bagel texture — I decided I have to buy it next time I come back. There seems to be creamy, onion-flavored cream sandwiched inside, which makes me even more curious about it.

Garlic bread ₩6,800, coffee bread ₩5,800. Most of the bread is priced in the ₩3,000s to ₩5,000s, so you can pick without much guilt, and the loaves are pretty big too — this is definitely a great-value bakery in Ikseon-dong.

Garlic bread at 6,800 won, sliced and packed to go

Our beautiful garlic bread order. It had a generous amount of garlic sauce and was a big loaf too, so I was so looking forward to it.

If you ask them to cut it, they'll slice it before packing it up.

Rice-chestnut loaf and garlic bread in takeout bags

I planned to keep the rice-chestnut loaf and eat it as breakfast bread each morning, while the garlic bread was for eating right away — so my brother and I tried some street-side snacking haha.

Eating Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread on the street

How does Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread taste?

It was genuinely moist, packed with garlic cream so it was super creamy, and the flavor was insane. The sweetness and the sharp garlic kick worked together perfectly .ᐟ.ᐟ.ᐟ I thought if any was left over I'd reheat it in the air fryer, but instead of leftovers… my brother and I finished it together in three minutes… everyone else should buy two garlic breads instead of one and stock up.

The rice-chestnut loaf was huge too, and I can't wait to have it with coffee in the morning .ᐟ.ᐟ.ᐟ

If you're ever in Ikseon-dong, Munhwa Bakery is a must-stop bakery. The garlic bread was beyond expectations — dense and deeply flavorful, a must-eat for any bread lover. Since it's takeout only, it's great to bring back to a nearby café or home to enjoy comfortably. Skip late evening and go in the early afternoon to catch the bestsellers.
