Korean pub in Yeon-dong, Jeju for last-night soju after Hanwoo: Jumo

Jumo (주모) is a Korean pub in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, in a basement on Sin-daero 20-gil, where a projector in the middle of the room screens movies. On the last night of a Jeju trip, after a Hanwoo (Korean beef) dinner, the writer stopped at Jumo for a second round of soju with grilled blue crab (₩33,000), which was packed with meat and smelled of butter, and whole squid bibim noodles (₩24,000), whose spicy sauce paired well with the chewy squid. For a night near a Yeon-dong hotel when both atmosphere and good drinking food matter, Jumo is a good fit.

Yeon-dong, Jeju hanwoo BBQ: salt brisket and soju at Dolgyeok Hanwoo

Dolgyeok Hanwoo (돌격한우) is a hanwoo (Korean beef) BBQ restaurant inside Nuwemaru Jewon in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, about 10 minutes by car from Jeju Airport. On the last night of a Jeju trip, after returning the rental car, the writer ordered Dolgyeok Chadolbagi (brisket, 22,000 won) and two portions of Manong Galbisal (garlic-marinated rib meat, 27,000 won each) with soju. The brisket was rich and nutty with just salt, and the Manong Galbisal paired sharp garlic with a soy marinade well. Dolgyeok Hanwoo is a good spot for beef and soju in Jeju when you want something other than black pork.

Seogwipo black pork BBQ with 200g belly portions and meljeot: Giunne

Giunne Black Pork Seogwipo Olle Market Main Branch (기운네흑돼지 서귀포올레시장 본점) is a black pork restaurant near Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market in Seogwipo, Jeju, serving fresh Jeju pork in 200g portions. On a weekday evening, the writer and a friend shared 2 portions of black pork belly with meljeot (salted anchovy sauce) and pajeori (spring onion salad). They finished with complimentary doenjang stew and yeolmu guksu (young radish noodles). With thick, chewy pork belly, generous portions and homemade side dishes, Giunne Black Pork is worth shortlisting when choosing a black pork restaurant in Seogwipo.

Daemyeong-dong chicken BBQ for daytime soju, Daegu: Hyeongnim Dakgui

Hyeongnim Dakgui Daemyeong-dong Gyeongdae branch is a charcoal-grilled chicken BBQ restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, near Keimyung University's Daemyeong campus. Around 3 pm on a weekday, the writer and a friend stopped in for daytime drinks. They ordered a chicken platter, half salt-grilled and half spicy-marinated (44,000 won), with soju, plus the free self-bar with marinated crab, scrambled eggs and ramyeon. Because Hyeongnim Dakgui has no break time, it is a good choice for charcoal chicken and soju at an in-between hour.

Gamsam Station gukbap spot for bossam and day drinks: Mubokka Gukbap

Mubokka Gukbap Gamsam Branch (무보까국밥 감삼점) is a gukbap (Korean rice soup) restaurant near Exit 3 of Gamsam Station in Dalseo, Daegu, that also serves drinking food like bossam (boiled pork wraps) and sundae (Korean blood sausage). Over a lunchtime drink with a friend, we ordered the Mubokka Bossam (₩32,000) and a tasting sundae (₩8,000). The pork was tender with no gamey smell, and the crunchy bossam kimchi was so good we ordered more. With refillable gukbap broth served alongside the bossam and soju and beer at ₩3,000, Mubokka Gukbap Gamsam Branch is a great-value spot for daytime drinking.

Clear chicken hot pot with cheongyang chili at a Daegu bar: Sugisogeum

Sugisogeum Keimyung University branch is a Korean bar in the bar alley by Keimyung University's east gate in Dalseo, Daegu. At 8pm on a holiday evening there was no wait, and the order was clear chicken hot pot for 25,000 won, sugi-bap rice for 13,000 won and soju, with cheongyang chili added to turn the chewy chicken thigh broth spicy. Sugisogeum Keimyung University branch is roomier than the Gyodong branch, so a group of four can settle in for a long drink.
