Jongno bar with a 7-team weeknight wait: duck pancake, Ari Gyegok

In short

Ari Gyegok Jonggak (아리계곡 종각점) is a fusion Korean bar on Ujeongguk-ro 2-gil in Jongno-gu, Seoul. On a weekday evening on August 6, 2026, the writer went in at 7pm and left at 8pm, when 7 groups were still waiting for a table, and reordered the muddy duck pancake at 19,900 won for a second visit in a row. With the cheese buldak hot pot, black sesame cucumber salad and gungjungsul wangju rice wine alongside, the combination was good enough that Ari Gyegok Jonggak is worth a return trip.

Table setting at Ari Gyegok Jonggak, a bar near Jonggak Station

Ari Gyegok Jonggak is a place I'd happily go back to whenever I feel like drinking with some fusion Korean food. I went in around 7pm on a weekday, August 6, 2026, and left around 8pm — and by the time I left, there were 7 teams waiting. The muddy duck pancake, ₩19,900, was especially satisfying — satisfying enough that I ordered it again after having it once before — and the combo with cabbage and lettuce was my favorite part.

I got seated right away at 7pm on a weekday, but by 8pm when I left, 7 teams were waiting. Across my two visits, the one dish I ordered both times was the muddy duck pancake.

How many groups are waiting at Ari Gyegok Jonggak on a weeknight?

I visited on a weekday and went in around 7pm. It was clearly busier by the time I left than when I came in, and when I checked around 8pm, there was a 7-team wait. I saw firsthand that even on weekdays, a line can form during peak dinner hours, so if you don't like waiting, going a bit earlier than 8pm might be smarter. That said, this is based on just the one day I visited, August 6, 2026.

Muddy duck pancake, 19,900 won: the dish I ordered again

The first thing I want to recommend at Ari Gyegok is the muddy duck pancake, ₩19,900. This wasn't my first time trying it — I liked it from a previous visit and ordered it again this time. It's not a dish I tried once and moved on from; actually reordering it is, for me, the clearest sign of satisfaction. The duck was crispy on the outside and moist inside, and it reminded me a little of Peking duck. Wrapping it with cabbage and lettuce contrasts the crispy duck with crunchy vegetables, so it felt less heavy than eating the meat alone.

The cheese buldak hot pot, ₩23,900, is a spicy buldak (fire chicken) dish served with a generous cheese fondue for dipping. The cheese wasn't a stingy little portion — there was plenty for a good dunk, and if you like spicy food paired with cheese, this will suit you well. The black sesame cucumber salad, ₩7,900, looked the plainest of the three but had a clear job to do alongside the others. When the duck's richness and the buldak's spice built up, the crunchy cucumber reset my palate. If I could only pick one of the three again, it'd be the muddy duck pancake, and if ordering multiple, I'd get this exact combo again: muddy duck pancake + cheese buldak hot pot + black sesame cucumber salad.

Cheese buldak hot pot, 23,900 won: a seriously generous cheese fondue

Second up: the cheese buldak hot pot (ttukbaegi cheese buldak). This is spicy buldak eaten together with cheese fondue. What I had tasted exactly like what people picture when they hear "buldak + cheese fondue."

What I liked most was the amount of cheese. It wasn't a token drizzle — it came in fondue-like quantity, plenty to slather over the buldak. Eating the spicy chicken dipped in cheese hits you with spice and cheese flavor at the same time — a pretty intense combo. If you usually like adding cheese to spicy food, this should be right up your alley.

Black sesame cucumber salad, 7,900 won: the key to the combination

At first glance, the black sesame cucumber salad might look plain compared to the main dishes. But eating all three together, this one actually pulls its weight in the middle. After the duck pancake and the spicy cheese buldak, your mouth keeps carrying richness and heat — and that's when the cucumber salad clears it all out. The cucumber itself is crunchy, so the texture shifts noticeably between the crispy duck and the spicy buldak.

So if you're ordering the muddy duck pancake with the cheese buldak hot pot, I'd recommend adding the black sesame cucumber salad too.

Comparing the three dishes I ordered

  • Muddy duck pancake, ₩19,900 — crispy outside, tender inside, a bit like Peking duck, eaten with cabbage and lettuce
  • Cheese buldak hot pot, ₩23,900 — spicy buldak with a generous cheese fondue
  • Black sesame cucumber salad, ₩7,900 — the crunchy palate cleanser of the trio

If I could only pick one of the three again, it'd be the muddy duck pancake, and if eating all three together, I'd order this exact combo again.

Gungjungsul wangju rice wine: sweet, but not too sweet

For a drink, I ordered gungjungsul wangju. To my taste, it wasn't overly bitter or strong — a mild sweetness came through first. It also paired well with the fusion Korean dishes. Ari Gyegok Jonggak has several other kinds of alcohol besides gungjungsul wangju, but since this is the only one I actually drank this visit, I can't compare it to the others.

The gungjungsul wangju I drank felt mildly sweet rather than bitter or strong, and it went fine with the fusion Korean dishes. I'd go back to Ari Gyegok Jonggak whenever I want food and drinks together, and next time I'd like to try the chicken hot pot I missed this time.

To sum up: I confirmed a 7-team wait at 8pm on a weekday evening, August 6, 2026, and the muddy duck pancake, ₩19,900, was a dish I ordered for the second time in a row after a previous visit. If you dislike waiting, go a bit earlier than peak hours, and if it's your first visit, I'd recommend starting with the muddy duck pancake.
