Hapjeong sashimi bar: sea squirt and abalone guts sauce at Ppaeret

In short

Ppaeret is a Korean sashimi bar and gastropub in Mapo, Seoul, on the street between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations. From a counter seat, the meal was sea squirt sashimi (50,000 won, price varies) and fried abalone with guts sauce (48,000 won), and the abalone guts sauce tasted like a thick abalone cream pasta, the best thing on the table that night. Both dishes at Ppaeret are worth scraping the plate clean, even without a drink.

Inside Ppaeret: the space and the counter seats

Ppaeret's exterior between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations

Ppaeret sits between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations, so it's really easy to get to.

Ppaeret's interior with bar counter and table seating

There were plenty of seats inside, both bar counter and tables. We had a reservation, so we sat at the bar.

The reserved bar counter seats at Ppaeret

Inside there are about five or six tables. The vibe is nice and the space is surprisingly spacious and comfortable, so it seems like a good spot for both friend hangouts and dates.

This photo is from Naver, but everything looked so delicious it was really hard to choose ㅜㅜ. The black sesame one in particular looked amazing too, but it was already sold out ㅠㅠㅠ

What we ordered at Ppaeret and what it cost

  • Fried abalone with guts sauce ₩48,000
  • Sea squirt sashimi ₩50,000 (price varies)
The zero-sugar cola we ordered

Here you're required to order at least one drink per person, whether alcoholic or not, so we ordered a zero-sugar cola.

Side dishes with sesame sauce and seaweed

These are the side dishes they gave us! That sweet-and-sour sesame sauce paired really well with the seaweed-like side!!

What does sea squirt (mideodeok) sashimi taste like?

The sea squirt sashimi finally arrived!! I'd never had it before so I was really curious, and the look of it is amazing ㅠㅠ It's like orange gems, so glossy and pretty!

Glossy orange-hued sea squirt sashimi

You can dip it in chojang (vinegared red pepper paste), sesame oil sauce, or soy sauce.

Three sauces: chojang, sesame oil sauce, and soy sauce

Doesn't it look kind of like a tiny sea squirt? Actually the taste is like that too.

It's really tender and soft, and full of oceanic aroma.

A tender piece of sea squirt sashimi

The very top part is a bit chewy and tough, so you can eat it or leave it, up to you.

I tried each of those three sauces, and as expected the chojang went best with it.

One bite of the sea squirt sashimi fills your mouth with the aroma of the sea.

It was really delicious with wasabi too.

Fried abalone with guts sauce, the best dish of the night

Next up is the fried abalone, which was the winner today.

A plate of fried abalone topped with guts sauce

They fried a whole, huge abalone and sliced it up, then piled generous guts sauce on top.

Whole abalone fried and sliced up

But this abalone guts sauce was so rich and thick and truly delicious.

The rich, thick abalone guts cream sauce

The second I took a bite it tasted like a really thick, delicious abalone guts cream pasta.

A piece of fried abalone coated in guts sauce

I really love this kind of guts cream sauce, and out of all I've had, this was overwhelmingly the best.

Cross-section of a big, firm abalone piece

And they used really firm, big abalone too. There's a reason the price is high.

The thin frying batter on the abalone

It was so, so good that my friend and I kept exclaiming with every single bite. The thin frying batter wasn't heavy at all and was genuinely delicious. Just incredibly savory.

Black sesame mochi tofu from the review event

This is the black sesame mochi tofu I got as a review event item. The texture was unusual, kind of like cream cheese. If you like black sesame flavor, I think you'd enjoy it.

Plates at Ppaeret licked completely clean

Honest verdict on Ppaeret

It was so, so good that we licked the plates clean without even drinking alcohol. I really recommend these two dishes ♥
