Chuncheon mak guksu restaurant with solo seats: Hyeondae Memil
In short
Hyeondae Memil is a mak guksu (cold buckwheat noodle) and sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) restaurant in Chuncheon, a short walk from Namchuncheon Station. Arriving right at the 17:00 reopening after break time, the writer ordered buckwheat warm sujebi, bibim mak guksu and sous vide pork tenderloin, and got two king mandu (large dumplings) from the review event. Going in before the queue builds means trying all three dishes at an unhurried pace inside the hanok dining room.

What kind of restaurant is Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon?
Hyeondae Memil is a mak guksu (buckwheat noodle) and sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) restaurant known as a Namchuncheon Station favorite. The address is 29-1 Namchun-ro 5beon-gil, 1st floor, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, and it's open daily from 11:00 to 20:30.
Hyeondae Memil, famous as a Namchuncheon Station spot!! I'd already heard so much hype about this place~!! I was craving both the pork and the mak guksu so I went straight there!!

Walking to Hyeondae Memil from Namchuncheon Station, and where to park

Hyeondae Memil is really close to Namchuncheon Station... if you park at a nearby lot and walk, it's just a moment away!! There's also plenty of street parking around!!
The hanok exterior

There's a white dog guarding Hyeondae Memil... so cute I had to snap a photo right away ㅜㅜ how can it be this adorable.. I wanted to take it home with me
Hyeondae Memil hours and the best time to skip the queue

Open every day from 11am to 8:30pm!! Thanks to the generous hours you can come even late!! It's a genuinely popular spot with long waits, so try to avoid peak mealtimes ㅜㅜ

There's a menu board outside for you to browse while waiting!! I decided on my order in advance!! I made a point of visiting right when it reopened in the afternoon!
Inside the hanok dining room
Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon is full of things to look at!! Since the restaurant sits inside a traditional Korean house, every little prop inside seems carefully chosen...

The atmosphere and the framed art at Hyeondae Memil all match perfectly somehow...
Hyeondae Memil is full of cute little props! They even have those trendy squishy toys for sale... I've already bought too many, so I held off this time..
There's even a retro TV at Hyeondae Memil!! This place is truly committed to its concept... decorated this beautifully, wow~!!

Hyeondae Memil sells a wide variety of dishes!! The descriptions of the signature menu items are detailed and every single one looks delicious... I ordered the buckwheat warm sujebi, the special mak guksu, and the sous vide pork!

You can check Hyeondae Memil's signature menu items in advance!!

Seating layout
No two seats look alike at Hyeondae Memil!! Each 2- and 4-person table and chair set has its own distinct character... haha
The wall decor is different in every corner too, so having so many themes going on is a real feature of Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon!! Eating a meal in a place like this feels so good haha
My favorite was the floor seating!! First come, first served~!! Since I prefer sitting in a chair, I went with a chair seat ㅜㅜ
How long is the wait at Hyeondae Memil?

While I was waiting for my food, the line started forming... I'm really glad I came a little early... if it's crowded, take a number and wait a bit!

Still, since it's noodle food, the turnover is quick!! I ate fast and cleared my seat quickly too~!!
Table setting and the solo dining counter
Each table comes set with spoons, chopsticks, side plates, and paper cups! Everything's ready to go, so use as much as you need~!! Call staff if you need any other dishware!!
Hyeondae Memil even has seating for solo diners!! It seats about two people, and you can eat without feeling awkward about being alone!

They even serve water in glass bottles at Hyeondae Memil, a real sign of a solid restaurant.. just walking in you can tell why it's famous... time to eat!!
The full table: warm buckwheat sujebi, bibim mak guksu and sous vide pork

Finally, today's full Hyeondae Memil spread!! I went ahead and ordered the signature menu items sold at Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon~!! Doesn't it look so good? It really is delicious... (asking and answering myself...)
Sous vide pork tenderloin
First up, the main event of the day — the pork!! There's nowhere else you can get pork like this at this price except Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon...

Warm buckwheat sujebi
I ordered the warm sujebi because I wanted something hot!! The sujebi dough is strangely gray in color... (must be the buckwheat~)
Bibim mak guksu
I ordered the bibim mak guksu to eat alongside the pork!! Pork + mak guksu — need I say more~!!
The sous vide pork tenderloin is unbelievably tender... this was my first time eating sous vide meat, and the tenderness is out of control.... it just melts away
Look at this soft, silky sous vide pork tenderloin~!! Writing this now makes me want to eat it again...
The kimchi served alongside the kalguksu (knife-cut noodles)! It's fresh geotjeori (unfermented cabbage kimchi), crisp and delicious~! It pairs so well with the warm sujebi!

This is how the food is served!! With so many customers, the Hyeondae Memil staff must be working so hard... haha customers just keep pouring in..

Taking another photo of today's Hyeondae Memil spread!! Doesn't it look so good~! Come visit Chuncheon!! So glad I ordered all three dishes.!!

Hyeondae Memil's mak guksu portion is huge!! Prices are low but the portions are never skimpy.. such a generous owner at Hyeondae Memil~
Take another look at the pork!! It keeps telling me to keep looking at it... the shishito peppers and fresh radish salad served alongside are delicious too!! The dipping options include salt, ssamjang (thick soybean paste), wasabi, and what might be a yuzu sauce!
The warm buckwheat sujebi felt a lot like shabu-shabu! I especially love shabu-shabu so this made me even happier~
The bowl is seriously the size of a basin... packed with vegetables, packed with sujebi, and they even add chadolbagi (thinly sliced beef brisket) on top — how is this the price~!
Piling the various side vegetables onto the sous vide pork!! Every single dish is pretty too... looks like they sourced the ceramic bowls themselves

What to order at Hyeondae Memil
I'd recommend ordering one bibim (mixed, no broth) dish and one broth-based dish!! Alternating between them means cold and hot, just right!

Plenty of bok choy too, my favorite~ Order the warm sujebi at Hyeondae Memil and they give you a soy sauce dip! Just dip the vegetables and meat in it~!
The sujebi has such a strange shape!! At first I thought it looked like flat dumplings haha it's colored like buckwheat since it's made with buckwheat

Mixed up my bibim mak guksu nicely!! They also give you a bit of baek-kimchi (white, non-spicy kimchi) on the side, which is the kicker!! You can really feel the attention to detail
I tried the sous vide pork in a few different combinations!! Still, the best was dipping it in ssamjang with fresh radish salad~!! I love radish kimchi so much that this is my favorite way to eat it!
Next combination: piling pork onto the bibim mak guksu!! So many people were eating it this way~!! A combination every single Korean approves of...
When eating the warm sujebi, try the dough with the vegetables together!! The broth was so delicious too... the best
Review event: two king mandu
As a review event, a whopping 2 pieces of king mandu (dumplings)!! I was full but there was no way I wasn't eating them.'.. immediately pulled out my phone and wrote the review...
They pour a generous amount of soy sauce on top... it's a seasoned soy sauce so it's not salty and pairs perfectly

As a total mandu addict, even though I was so full I couldn't not eat them... so delicious.. haha definitely ordering these again next time!!
Paying the bill

Ate well, paid, and headed out!! Right next to the payment counter is the solo seating!! It seats about two, so I'd highly recommend coming alone too!
Final verdict on Hyeondae Memil

I only found out today that a restaurant like Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon existed... next time I'm at Namchuncheon Station I have to eat here again~!! If you're visiting Chuncheon, try the pork, mak guksu, and sujebi combo~!!
