When I want a simple but filling meal on my own, picking the menu matters more than you'd think. Too light feels unsatisfying, but a big sit-down meal feels like a lot. I usually like dishes I can finish neatly in one bowl, like a rice bowl (donburi), so I went without much deliberation. I only planned to have the cube steak bowl, but once I finished I got curious about another dish and ended up ordering cold soba too. It's a comfortable place to eat alone, and I was looking forward to the food, so let me introduce Hekbap Kkachisan Branch (핵밥 까치산점) :-)

Where is Hekbap Kkachisan Branch, and what are the hours and parking?
Hekbap Kkachisan Branch is within a 3-minute walk of Exit 3 of Kkachisan Station (Lines 2 and 5). It is open daily from 11:00 to 21:00.
Being right by the station, it's easy to reach by subway. It's a handy spot if you're looking for a meal around the station or want a hearty bite in the Hwagok area. If you're driving, though, note that the restaurant has no parking lot of its own. If you need parking, you can use Baedari Seogil public parking lot (배다리서길공영주차장), about a 10-minute walk away. The menu centers on Japanese rice bowls, plus ramen, mazesoba (brothless mixed noodles), udon, curry and katsu, so there's plenty to choose from depending on your taste.

Is Hekbap Kkachisan Branch comfortable for eating alone?

There are window-side seats for one, and you order from a kiosk at each table, so eating alone felt easy. The inside was clean and pleasant overall.
When you walk into a restaurant alone, a big shared table can feel a bit awkward, so seats like these make it much more comfortable. The kiosk also let me browse the menu slowly before choosing. The rice bowl lineup is varied, with options like the pork jowl bowl and the cube steak bowl that meat lovers will welcome, and noodle dishes too, so there's a wide choice. It looked fine for coming with a friend as well, with each person picking what they want.

What is Hekbap's cube steak bowl?
The first thing I ordered at Hekbap Kkachisan Branch was the cube steak bowl. It's made with pork skirt (toshisal) cut into cubes and stir-fried quickly over high heat to bring out the smoky flavor and the taste of the meat.
Out of all the rice bowls, this one looked like the most generous with meat, so I picked it. The charm of a rice bowl is that the meat sits right on the rice, so you get a filling meal without lots of side dishes. With meat and rice together, it suits days when you don't want to overthink what to eat. When the food arrived, it was one bowl and done, which is easy for someone eating alone.

Above all, the cube steak bowl suits anyone who wants a hearty meal centered on meat. Cooking the pork skirt over strong heat to bring out its flavor and smokiness promises something a bit different from an ordinary rice bowl. Eating the rice and meat together made it easy to scoop up bite after bite, and it's a safe choice if you like meat. Side dishes like cabbage salad, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and danmuji (yellow pickled radish) were also there to reset my palate between bites. I'd planned to leave after this one dish, but once I finished I got curious about the noodles. After some hesitation, I ordered cold soba as an add-on to try something more.

How was the cold soba I added after the rice bowl?
After the cube steak bowl, I added cold soba, a dish you eat chilled. Hekbap's cold soba is described as cold buckwheat noodles (naengmomil) in a signature broth, with vegetables and tenkatsu (fried cutlet pieces) added for savory depth.
Since I'd just finished a meaty rice bowl, I was looking for something to refresh my mouth, and cold noodles seemed like a good match. It's the kind of dish you'd especially think of on a hot day or when you'd rather have something cool than a hot soup. I also liked that you can enjoy both a rice bowl and a noodle dish here. When one dish isn't enough, you can add something different, which seemed like a good way to be more satisfied with the meal.

Because the cold soba pairs chilled broth with noodles, it was a different way to finish a meal compared with a meat-focused rice bowl. The vegetables and crunchy tenkatsu promise more varied textures than cold noodles with just broth. If I'd ordered the noodles together with the rice bowl from the start, it might have felt like too much, but eating the bowl first and adding the soba afterward let me enjoy each dish in order. Hekbap also sells other noodle dishes like ramen, mazesoba and udon, so I wanted to try those next time. It felt like a place where, even alone, you won't regret your menu choice.

Would I recommend Hekbap Kkachisan Branch for a solo meal near Kkachisan Station?
If you're looking for a comfortable place to eat alone near Kkachisan Station, Hekbap Kkachisan Branch is worth a look. The shop is clean, there are seats for one, and with meat rice bowls through to a range of noodle dishes, it takes the stress out of choosing.
This time I started with a hearty cube steak bowl and then added cold soba, so I got to enjoy two dishes. It's a good place for days when you want a simple meal or can't decide between rice and noodles. If you're near Kkachisan Station and craving a Japanese rice bowl or cold soba, stop by Hekbap Kkachisan Branch and enjoy a filling meal with whatever suits your taste. Totally recommend it :-)
