Buk-gu, Busan Chinese restaurant, solo seafood japtangbap: Hongmigwan
In short
Hongmigwan (홍미관) is a Chinese restaurant near Deokcheon Station in Gupo, Buk-gu, Busan, reportedly run by an owner who used to be a Chinese chef at a luxury hotel. After a walking class, the writer had a solo lunch of japtangbap (mixed seafood stir-fry over rice) and a mini tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork) with the sauce poured on, and liked the smoky, seafood-packed japtangbap best. Hongmigwan serves well-made Chinese-Korean food at easy prices and is a good spot for eating alone.

What kind of Chinese restaurant is Hongmigwan in Buk-gu, Busan?
Hongmigwan (홍미관) is a Chinese restaurant in Gupo, Buk-gu, Busan, and it's also well known as a jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) spot in Buk-gu. After class I went looking for a hearty lunch and ended up here.

This time I tried the japchaebap and the mini tangsuyuk at Hongmigwan, and it was a satisfying meal where you can really feel the touch of a chef from a luxury hotel. If you're looking for properly made Chinese food in Gupo, I'm happy to recommend dropping by at least once.

Why Hongmigwan for a solo lunch after walking class
Some days after walking class I get really hungry. That day I was craving good Chinese food, searched the area, and found Hongmigwan.

I wanted tangsuyuk and also something warm, so I went in with high hopes, and I liked it from the first impression: a clean shop with a tidy, neat atmosphere.

Hongmigwan's atmosphere and solo-dining seats
Hongmigwan is said to be run directly by an owner who used to be a chef at a luxury hotel's Chinese restaurant. Medals from various cooking competitions and his career history are displayed inside, which made me even more excited about the food.

I often eat alone. Hongmigwan has seats where solo diners can sit comfortably, so it was great for a solo meal. Overall it was clean and tidy, which made it a nice place to eat.
Hongmigwan's mini tangsuyuk: still crispy with the sauce poured on?
Mini tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork)

Hongmigwan's mini tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork) came "bumeok" style, with the sauce already poured over, and even so the batter didn't go soggy easily. The mini tangsuyuk came out first, and it's pour-on style, haha. I'm a dipping person myself, you know. Still, the crunch was alive.

You know "gyeot-ba-sok-chok" (crispy outside, juicy inside)? Bite in and the outside is crunchy while the pork inside is thick and moist. No gamey smell, the meat texture was tender, and the portion was generous, so it felt great value for the price. The sauce was sweet and sour too, and I enjoyed it.
What does Hongmigwan's japtangbap taste like?
Japtangbap (seafood stir-fry over rice)

The dish I liked most on this visit to Hongmigwan was the japchaebap. A thick sauce packed with seafood like shrimp and squid, plus assorted vegetables and meat, was generously ladled over warm rice. Every ingredient tasted fresh, and the subtle smoky wok flavor made it very flavorful.

It wasn't strongly salty, so I could finish it without feeling weighed down, and the mix of ingredients made it fun to chew.
"A dish that puts several Chinese dishes in one bowl" — that description fits this japchaebap perfectly.
Hongmigwan verdict: worth going back?
Hongmigwan was better than I expected, and next time I plan to come back for the samseon jjamppong (three-seafood spicy noodle soup). After walking class I care about a meal that's filling yet tasty. The mini tangsuyuk in particular was a fitting portion to share alongside the japchaebap, and the food felt clean overall, so my stomach was comfortable too.
Above all, my impression was of Chinese food with solid fundamentals, enough that you can feel a luxury-hotel chef's touch. Next visit I definitely want to try the samseon jjamppong that many people recommend.
Hongmigwan lives up to the name of a great Chinese restaurant. As a "Good Price" designated restaurant (착한가격업소, a local-government-certified low-price shop), it's easy on the wallet while the food is highly polished. Having eaten here myself, I can see why neighborhood residents keep coming. If you're looking for a great Chinese restaurant in Buk-gu, Busan, a jjamppong spot, or a place known for samseon jjamppong, I recommend Hongmigwan.
