Butcher BBQ in Haemil-dong, Sejong: aged pork neck and belly, Hanmaeum

Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Sejong Haemil branch (한마음정육식당 세종해밀점) is an aged beef and pork butcher restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Haemil Village Complex 1 shopping building in Haemil-dong, Sejong. We grilled aged pork neck (moksal) and five-layer pork belly (ogyeopsal), then had doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), side dishes and nurungji (scorched rice); the meat was thick and clean-tasting, and the playroom separate from the dining hall made it an easy family meal. With no table setting fee and underground parking registration, Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant is a relaxed, budget-friendly place for Korean BBQ in Haemil-dong.

Gangnam Station izakaya for 4 friends: aged sashimi and yakitori, Goko

Izakaya Goko Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Branch is an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) on the 2nd floor of a building on Bongeunsa-ro 2-gil in Gangnam, Seoul, between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station. Four friends reuniting after a long time shared aged sashimi for 3-4 people, a 7-skewer yakitori set and salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll) with draft beer in a semi-open booth screened by curtains. Izakaya Goko is a good spot near Gangnam Station for catching up over everything from sashimi to skewers without too much noise.

Sinnonhyeon café, frozen choux, corn financier: Something About Coffee

Something About Coffee (썸띵어바웃커피) is a three-floor dessert café on Gangnam-daero 102-gil near Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On a first visit, the writer ordered the hoji choux milk tea topped with a frozen cream puff on a skewer, a peach fresh cream cake, an iced Americano and a super sweet corn financier, and was struck by the antique interior set in an old building and the desserts displayed under glass domes. Something About Coffee suits anyone looking for not-too-sweet summer desserts in a calm space.

Daechi-dong eel rice bowl lunch: Gochang eel, sansho & ginger, Manmok

Manmok (만목) is an eel rice bowl restaurant near Seolleung Station Exit 2, in the Daechi-dong office district of Gangnam, Seoul. The writer and a companion had Manmok's whole Gochang freshwater eel rice bowl (39,000 won) for lunch; the eel is grilled, steamed and then charcoal-grilled twice more, giving a rich, deeply seared outside and a moist inside, and sansho pepper and ginger kept every bite from getting heavy. For a calm, filling lunch in a quiet wood-toned room, Manmok is worth adding to the shortlist.

Indian lunch in Sejong: shrimp makhani & lamb masala at Bombay Brew

Bombay Brew (봄베이브로이) is an Indian restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building on Saeromjungang-ro in Saerom-dong, Sejong, with a pub concept that pairs curries with beer and wine. At lunch the writer ordered shrimp makhani, lamb masala and freshly baked naan; a candle warmer kept the curries hot to the last bite, and the weekday lunch sets (Deli 19,800 won, Bombay 24,800 won) were well put together. Verdict: Bombay Brew is a dependable choice whenever you crave Indian curry in Sejong.

Sejong restaurant with cheddar rigatoni bolognese: Le Garden Bleu

Le Garden Bleu is a Western restaurant on the first floor of KT&G Sejong Tower A in Eojin-dong, Sejong, serving pasta and pastry-dough pizza. Three of us shared classic vongole, cheddar cheese rigatoni bolognese and a pepperoni mushroom cream pizza, plus brioche with scrambled eggs and carrot rapée, and the cheddar cheese rigatoni bolognese was the standout. Le Garden Bleu is a place I'd return to whenever I crave Western food in Sejong.

Sejong pho restaurant with pencil spring rolls: Mekong Thai Naseong

Mekong Thai Sejong Naseong Branch is a Vietnamese and Thai restaurant on the 2nd floor of the NS Building in the Naseong-dong restaurant street in Sejong. At Mekong Thai we ordered a large combo pho (13,900 won for the regular price listing), seafood fried rice and pencil spring rolls as a side, dipping only the meat in a mix of red chili sauce and black bean sauce. The spices at Mekong Thai are mild enough for first-timers, and the portions were right for two people to share.
