Sinyongsan tteokbokki spot with peach Kool Fizz slushie: Hyeonseonine

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) snack bar in Yongsan, Seoul, near Sinyongsan Station Exits 5 and 6, and it began as a street stall. After waiting behind two parties at 5pm on a Sunday, two of us shared the medium-spice Hyeonseonine Combo Set for 3 with brothy sweet-spicy tteokbokki, sesame-oil mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls) and a peach Kool Fizz slushie from a review event. The Hyeonseonine Combo Set for 3 is a lot for two people, so it suits anyone who wants a filling bunsik (Korean snack food) spread.

Rice cake, fritter, sundae, fish cake, gimbap — the perfect combo!! A snack bar worth waiting for: Hyeonseonine

What kind of place is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch?

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a well-known tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) spot near Sinyongsan Station Exits 5 and 6, in Yongsan. It started as a street cart and is a real, old-school bunsik (Korean snack food) place — I finally paid it a visit. 🌶️

I'd heard the name for years, but visiting in person, the place was bigger than I expected and packed with customers. Since Hyeonseonine started as a street cart, there were photos of the old days hung around the restaurant, which was fun to look at.

Is there a wait at Hyeonseonine even at 5pm on a Sunday?

I went to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch around 5pm on a Sunday, and there were already about two parties waiting. Waiting is managed through CatchTable. We didn't wait too long, but by the time we finished eating and left, there were way more people waiting than when we arrived. (A queue at a bunsik place, wow!!!)

The restaurant had a lively atmosphere~~~ some 90s-00s music was playing haha, and most of the staff were young, giving off an energetic, quick-moving vibe that kept the place feeling alive even with so many customers.

On the TV inside Hyeonseonine, clips of past visitors kept playing, and I spotted celebrities like Choiza, Jo Hye-ryun, and Kang Min-kyung, which made me think, 'okay, this really is an old, famous spot.'

What's at the self-serve bar?

At Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, pickled radish, aprons, salt, and soy sauce are all self-serve! There's a dedicated self-serve bar off to the side where you can grab pickled radish, aprons, small plates, spoons and chopsticks, a ladle, and salt and soy sauce for sundae (Korean blood sausage).

Just a note: Hyeonseonine's menu is split into regular tteokbokki and instant (hot-pot style) tteokbokki, so keep that in mind.

How spicy is Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki? 🌶️

At Hyeonseonine you can choose mild, medium, or spicy heat for the tteokbokki, and we went with medium. The in-store sign explained it like this:

  • Mild: a sweet, nostalgic flavor even young kids can enjoy
  • Medium: a little spicier than Shin Ramyun, the most popular choice
  • Spicy: Hyeonseonine's signature! An extreme heat that even spice lovers might struggle with

Trying the medium, it was definitely spicy, but not painfully so — the balance between the sweet tteokbokki sauce and the heat was really good. If you like spicy food, this level is very enjoyable.

Can two people finish the Hyeonseonine Combo Set for three?

We ordered the Hyeonseonine Combo Set, 3 portions! There were only two of us, but we wanted to try a bit of everything, so we went with the 3-portion set. We ended up stuffed to the brim hahahaha. From tteokbokki to fish cake, sundae, fritters, and mini gimbap, you get to taste it all at once, so if it's your first visit, the set menu is a good call.

Broth tteokbokki paired with fry flour

The broth tteokbokki, the star of the Hyeonseonine Combo, really won me over. The rice cakes were chewy, the broth was generous, and the flavor was sweet and spicy in a way that kept me reaching for more! It was also great for dipping the fritters or mini gimbap into the tteokbokki broth. There's fry flour at the self-serve bar, and adding some into the tteokbokki turned out to be its own delicious thing haha.

Sesame-oil mini gimbap

The gimbap (seaweed rice roll) in the Hyeonseonine Combo is mini gimbap~ Looking at the cross-section, it's a vegetable gimbap style, and with a generous amount of sesame oil brushed on, it was nutty and delicious haha.

The review-event peach Kool Fizz slushie 🍑

By joining Hyeonseonine's review event, I also got a peach-flavored Kool Fizz slushie. Eating a mountain of spicy tteokbokki and then having this cold, sweet peach slushie was a great combo — it completely reset my palate.

Who would I recommend Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch to?

When you're craving spicy broth tteokbokki in Yongsan, Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch still carries the atmosphere and history of its street-cart days in every corner, while now letting you enjoy a wide range of bunsik menu items comfortably in a spacious restaurant. Above all, the sweet-and-spicy, broth-rich tteokbokki was the most memorable part, and with sundae, fish cake, fritters, and mini gimbap, we had a full bunsik spread hahaha.

The Hyeonseonine Combo Set for 3 portions is quite a lot for two people, so I'd recommend it for anyone who really wants to eat until stuffed. 😂 It's also a good fit if you want to sample a little of everything. When you're craving tteokbokki in Yongsan, especially a spicy broth version, this is a place you'll think of again. 🌶️
