Today I want to share a neighborhood spot I've been keeping to myself haha. It's a pork bone hangover soup place tucked in an alley near Yeongdeungpogu-cheong Station, and this is actually already my second visit haha — gamjatang (pork bone stew) is basically my soul food. Let me show you this hidden gamjatang gem in Dangsan-dong right now~

Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk
Where is Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk, and what does it look like?
Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk is on the 1st floor at 26 Seonyu-dong 1-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Looking at the map, it's not far from Yeongdeungpogu-cheong Station, so it's pretty accessible. Turns out they even do breakfast~? Total Yeongdeungpogu-cheong gamjatang gem, that's what I'm talking about!

It was pouring rain that day, but the yellow sign totally stood out haha. No fancy design on the sign either — you can just tell it's a real, no-frills gem.

What was unique was that even though it's a gamjatang place, there was a poster near the entrance for kongguksu (cold soy milk noodles), saying it's made by grinding 100% domestic soybeans themselves. I'll have to come back for the kongguksu next time haha.

- Ppyeo-haejangguk (special) ₩12,000 / regular ₩9,000

The prices themselves are easy on the wallet, so it seemed like a place that would satisfy both solo diners and people out drinking.

Inside the restaurant and why the owner recommends the spicy broth
There were quite a few seats and the interior was totally clean. Best of all, it's an open kitchen, so it felt trustworthy~! No need to worry about hygiene there. Last time there was another staff member, but today the owner was on their own.
Maybe because we were the first customers of the dinner shift haha, the owner asked us in a lot of detail. We ordered regular spice level since we thought the spicy gamjatang would be too much, but the owner said it could actually be made less spicy than Shin Ramyun. So they recommended the spicy option~ Going spicy was absolutely the right call!

As soon as we sat down, they set the table with kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, onion, cheongyang chili peppers, ssamjang, and chojang sauce — a full spread. Every side dish was so neatly done that I was already excited before the main dish even arrived haha. This mustard sauce is totally my type!!!

Small gamjatang with an egg roll on the side
The gamjatang at Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk came out bubbling away with perilla leaves and complimentary sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) on top, so it already won me over visually. One bite in, it was perfectly spicy and rich at the same time. The meat was solidly attached to the bones too, so picking it off was half the fun. We ordered the small gamjatang and the amount of meat was seriously seriously generous~~ Every time I come here I'm impressed all over again.
Couldn't skip the thick egg roll either. Fluffy texture, and dipping it in a bit of ketchup made it the perfect side for rice. (Last time they poured the ketchup right on top of the egg roll, so this time I asked for it on the side separately haha — just a heads-up for you all)

Finishing with 3,000 won fried rice
You know the fried rice you order after finishing the gamjatang, right?👍 It's made totally crispy so you can scrape it right off the pan, and paired with the leftover broth, the combo was pure art haha. My partner and I were both scraping away with our spoons when the owner saw us and came over to scrape it with a proper tool haha. Every time I discover a real gem tucked away in an alley like this, I remember why I love finding neighborhood spots. I'll be back whenever I'm craving a hearty meal!
