Hongdae Japanese restaurant: sake-don & Asahi draft beer, Jongno
In short
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a Japanese rice bowl (donburi) restaurant on basement level 1 on Donggyo-ro 46-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. A staff member recommended the sake-don (salmon rice bowl) because the salmon was especially good that day; it came with onsen tamago (soft-cooked egg) and Asahi draft beer, the salmon melted softly with no fishy taste, and thoughtful touches like tea served instead of water, coat hangers and an open kitchen stood out. For a clean Japanese meal on a date or solo in Yeonnam-dong, the sake-don at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a good choice.

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam location and hours
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is on the basement level of 9 Donggyo-ro 46-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul. It's open weekdays 11:30-21:30 and weekends 11:30-21:00, with a break time from 16:00 to 17:00.

The exterior felt clean and well put together, and there was a menu board set up out front that was easy to read, so I could check out the menu even before going in. The whole place gave off a tidy, comfortable first impression. I was looking for somewhere to eat in Yeonnam-dong and ended up here — it wasn't crowded or chaotic, just neat and easy to relax in.

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam seating: good for solo dining or a date?
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam had a range of tables, from seats with a view outside to quiet spots for eating alone. People coming in for a solo meal wouldn't feel out of place, and it also seemed fine for a date or a meal with friends. The spacing between tables and the overall layout were kept neat. There were even dedicated coat hangers, so I didn't have to drape my coat over the chair while eating — a nice touch.

Open kitchen and the receipt review event
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam has an open kitchen, so you can see the food being prepared to some extent, which added to the sense of trust. The kitchen looked clean and well managed, which naturally raised my expectations for the food. They're also running a Naver receipt review event — after your meal, it's worth joining the receipt review event to get a free drink.

What we ordered at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam: staff-recommended sake-don
That day, a staff member recommended the sake-don because the salmon was in great condition, so we ordered sake-don along with onsen tamago and Asahi draft beer. The menu had a short description of the restaurant along with the full lineup, and each dish came with a photo and detailed description, which made it easy to choose. Having photos meant I could tell at a glance what each dish was, so even as a first-time visitor, choosing wasn't hard at all. Above all, I was won over by how kind the staff were. They explained the menu and how to eat each dish in detail when we ordered, so even on our first visit, we could enjoy the meal without any confusion.

Standard setup: banchan, miso soup, tea instead of water
The standard setup at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam included banchan (side dishes), soy sauce, and miso soup. The plating was clean and tidy overall, so the meal felt good from the very start, even before the main dish arrived. I especially liked that tea was served instead of water. Even the water bottle was kept neat — a small detail, but it gave the impression that the whole restaurant was carefully looked after.

The sake-don spread and Asahi draft beer
A beautiful sake-don spread arrived along with a cold Asahi draft beer. We'd ordered food and beer together, and I appreciated that the staff asked whether we wanted the draft beer served alongside the food. That kind of small consideration made the meal feel comfortable. With the neatly arranged dishes and the cold draft beer side by side, the whole presentation looked pretty great too.

How was the onsen tamago?
The onsen tamago (soft-boiled egg) at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam had a nice salty, savory flavor. The soft egg went well with both the rice and the salmon. The taste was good, but honestly the bowl itself was pretty enough to enjoy just looking at it. It felt like they'd put thought into the plating and tableware as well as the food itself, which lifted the overall dining mood even more.

The salmon and rice in the sake-don at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam
The salmon in the sake-don was really in great condition. It looked fresh at a glance, and eating it confirmed that — savory and soft, almost melting in the mouth. There was no fishy taste or any off-putting sensation, so I could enjoy the salmon's natural flavor comfortably. The rice wasn't too wet or too firm either, just right for a rice bowl, and it paired well with the salmon. Eating it along with the crunchy pickles in between added some textural variety, making the whole thing even more enjoyable. With salmon, rice, and pickles together, the flavor never got monotonous through the whole bowl.

Is this a good pick for a date or solo Japanese meal in Yeonnam-dong?
If you're looking for a clean Japanese restaurant for a date in Yeonnam-dong, I'd recommend Jongno Donburi Yeonnam. In a comfortable atmosphere, you can enjoy a neatly arranged rice bowl along with a variety of side dishes, and the staff were kind and attentive throughout, making for a satisfying overall meal. It also seemed like a great choice for a day when you want to eat quietly alone, or whenever you're looking for a clean place to eat in Yeonnam-dong.
