Here's the short version of what this bride-to-be thought after today's visit to Bap Jangin in Hongdae:
It's a Korean restaurant for solo dining in Hongdae, 3 minutes from Hongik Univ. Station, open with no break time so you can go anytime. Definitely order the jjageuli. I've already decided to come back haha
I stopped by Hongdae with a coworker that day. It was an awkward mid-afternoon time, and every restaurant seemed to be on break T_T So I searched hard for a place with no break time and found Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch. There are so many dessert shops around Hongik Univ. Station, right? After eating creamy stuff, I suddenly craved something spicy. Jjageuli!? So I headed over — and it turned out this place was already famous as a Hongdae kimchi jjigae spot 💛

How far is Bap Jangin from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 8?

It took less than 3 minutes to walk from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 8 to Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch. It's tucked in an alley, but the coral-colored awning stands out from a distance, so first-timers should find it easily.
In terms of accessibility alone, this was the best Korean restaurant in Hongdae.

On the pillar, a large vertical sign with the initials 'ㅂㅈㅇ' was posted. On the wall beside it, pork jjigae, kimchi jjigae, bulgogi, and squid stir-fry were listed, so the signature dishes were visible at a glance.

In front of the entrance stood a framed autograph from a celebrity visit 👀 Right beside it was a menu standee, so you could decide what to eat before even going in.
What is the dining room like inside Bap Jangin?

Maybe because it's a new building, the interior was really clean and hip. You'd usually picture a Korean restaurant as having a rustic vibe, right? But Bap Jangin had white tile walls, orange lighting, and brick-red chairs blending together for a café-like, stylish feel. And what stood out most was the neon sign reading 'h·bob' on one wall! That's the row where solo diners mostly sit. (Guess H BOB stands for 'honbap,' solo dining.)
I visited on a weekday at 4pm, and there were already 4-5 people eating alone.
The fact that so many people eat alone here even at such an in-between hour probably means it's a low-pressure kind of place, right? I can confidently recommend it to anyone looking for a solo dining spot in Hongdae.

Tables stretched all the way to the back, so the place was much bigger than I expected. It looked fine whether you come as a pair like us or as a big group.
Is there a restroom inside the restaurant?

This is a really important point! A lot of restaurants in Hongdae have restrooms you have to go outside and around the building to find, T_T. At Bap Jangin, the restroom is inside and it was clean.
What arrives on the table first?

Once seated, a water bottle, paper cups, tissues, and a container of gim-jaban (seasoned seaweed flakes) are already on the table. The spoons and chopsticks came in a paper sleeve, which felt hygienic. Side dishes aren't set at the start — you help yourself at the self-serve bar as needed.
What side dishes are on the self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar is toward the back of the restaurant. A sign listing the origin of ingredients hung above it, and stacks of brass side plates sat nearby.

There were three side dishes: kimchi, bean sprouts, and pickled chili. The bean sprouts were amazing..! T_T (I'm a bean sprout lover)

And unusually, there was even sesame oil available! It came in an adorable bear-shaped bottle haha. As a serious eater, I instantly knew that mixing a little stew broth with bean sprouts and sesame oil would basically make a bowl of bibimbap. Drooling already. You could go back for more without any awkwardness if you ran out, which made things easy. Disposable aprons were also available, so you didn't have to worry about splashing red stew on your clothes. Especially if you're coming for a work lunch in a shirt, definitely grab one!
How do you order at Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch?

You order using the tablet at each table. There's a card reader below the tablet, so you pay as soon as you order — a prepay system. You don't have to go to the counter separately, which is especially convenient when dining alone. There's also a language selection button, so foreign customers can order comfortably.

What I liked was being able to customize everything — spice level, stew type, and add-ons — to my own taste. The tablet ordering steps go like this:
- 1️⃣ Choose the menu
- 2️⃣ Choose the stew (e.g. pandubu jjageuli)
- 3️⃣ Choose spice level (mild / spicy / extra spicy)
- 4️⃣ Choose add-ons (e.g. steamed egg)
There's also a 'Tips for eating well' sign above the tablet. It suggests putting seaweed flakes into your rice and pouring the stew over it to mix — a handy tip for first-timers.
Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch menu and prices
- Jjageuli stew ₩11,000
- Kimchi jjigae ₩11,000
- Potato stew ₩11,000
- Bulgogi ₩13,000
- Squid stir-fry ₩17,000
- Big set menu ₩38,000
Every dish comes with warm rice, and apparently only domestic pork is used. You can eat a filling meal with rice for ₩11,000, so I'd call this a good-value spot in Hongdae. Solo diners might go for a single dish, while groups could go for the set menu.
What we ordered at 4pm for two

- Pandubu jjageuli (mild/savory) + rice ₩11,000
- Squid stir-fry (mild) + rice ₩17,000
- Steamed egg add-on ₩3,000
- Zero-sugar cola 500ml ₩2,000
- Total for two: ₩33,000
My coworker and I split two mains and a side, which worked out to about ₩16,500 each. Given how prices in Hongdae are these days, this is definitely a good-value restaurant ✨

The food arrived shortly after we ordered. The rice wasn't plain white rice — it was multigrain rice served in a brass bowl. And the portion was huge! It came out so large at first that I asked them to take half back T_T If you eat small portions, I'd recommend mentioning it in advance.
How the dishes tasted overall
Pandubu jjageuli (soft tofu stew) in a clay pot

My absolute pick is the jjageuli! Bap Jangin has specialized in jjageuli stew since 2014, so I had high expectations for their signature dish. It was savory with a slight kick, the kind of flavor that keeps you coming back for another spoonful. Best of all, it wasn't overly intense, so it never got tiring. This is a dish I'll genuinely come back for regularly. Next time, I want to try the spicier kimchi jjigae too.
Squid stir-fry at Bap Jangin

I ordered the squid stir-fry mild as well. The squid was cooked tender, not chewy at all, and it was less spicy than the jjageuli with more of a soy sauce flavor. Even at 'mild,' there was a slight lingering kick. And the unexpected star was the rice cake! It was so chewy and delicious that my coworker and I ended up picking out the rice cakes before the squid haha.
Is the steamed egg worth adding?

The ₩3,000 add-on was completely worth it. It came out puffed up beautifully in a stone bowl, and I'm someone who's weak for presentation... Since both the jjageuli and squid stir-fry were spicy, the steamed egg gave our mouths a break in between. The soft steamed egg neutralized the spiciness nicely, and the combination worked really well 💛
Tips for visiting Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch
- Portions are large, so mention it in advance if you eat small amounts.
- Try mixing bean sprouts, sesame oil, and stew broth from the self-serve bar like bibimbap.
- Definitely sprinkle on the table's seaweed flakes. I forgot because the main dish was so good, T_T and that regret alone is reason enough for me to come back!
- With no break time, you can visit comfortably even during those awkward mid-afternoon hours.
- Disposable aprons are available, so don't worry about red stew splashes.
- There's a Naver receipt review event too. Don't miss the free soda per table!
- There's also a Wi-Fi QR code on the table card. Wi-Fi is a must when dining solo~!
