Idobonga is a Korean rib restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building in front of Seodaejeon Station in Oryudong, Jung-gu, Daejeon. With Mom, the writer ordered the small galbijjim (braised short ribs, for 2) and yukhoe bibimbap (beef tartare rice bowl); the 12 side dishes, big ribs and sweet-salty sauce with chestnuts and ginkgo nuts stood out. Idobonga's mild seasoning makes it an easy pick for a family meal with parents near Seodaejeon Station.

Jonggak aged sashimi bar for a Seoul day-trip dinner: Suksseong

Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is an aged sashimi bar with private rooms on the 3rd floor of a building on Jonggak Youth Street, near Exit 4 of Jonggak Station in Seoul. On a weekend evening during a Seoul day trip, the writer and a friend booked through Naver Reservation, walked in with no wait and ordered the small aged sashimi platter (69,000 won), raw shrimp sashimi, clam fish cake soup and highballs, trying croaker and fried shrimp heads for the first time. With private partitioned seating and an easy trip to Seoul Station, Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch made a satisfying day-trip dinner spot.

Daejeon snack bar: 6 inari sushi to go for family, Kitsune Yubu

Kitsune Yubu Daejeon Dunsan is a Korean snack bar right by City Hall Station in Seo-gu, Daejeon, serving inari sushi (seasoned rice in fried tofu pockets), udon and tteokbokki. After a hospital appointment, the writer picked up six inari sushi flavors for the family, including sweet-salty beef brisket, seasoned beef yukhoe and creamy shrimp, at ₩2,300 to ₩3,500 each. The toppings were generous and the rice well seasoned, and the snug takeout box kept the inari sushi almost perfectly in shape. Kitsune Yubu is a good-value snack bar where inari sushi alone makes a filling meal.

Eel buffet in Jijok-dong, Daejeon with spicy chicken neck: Songrimbok

Songrimbok Jangeo Unlimited Eel Daejeon Direct Store (송림복장어) is an all-you-can-eat eel restaurant covering 130 pyeong (about 430 m²) on the first floor of Joeun Plaza in Jijok-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. After booking a weekend dinner, the writer grilled Korean freshwater eel, pork belly and chicken neck served together on one platter, and eel topped with ginger and pickled onion was the best combination. With private rooms, group seating and free parking right outside, Songrimbok is a good choice for a family meal with parents.

Daejeon restaurant with private rooms, saffron salmon risotto: THE MUA

THE MUA is a pasta and risotto restaurant in Tanbang-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, in the alley beside Tanbang Elementary School. Two diners arrived at 11:30 am on a weekend as the first customers, took a window table for four and ordered the smoky mare pasta and the saffron salmon risotto, and the risotto topped with salmon steak — crisp outside, moist inside — was the pick of the day. With a private room, baby chairs and free parking, THE MUA works equally well for a date, a family meal or a weekday office lunch.
