A big Hongcheon café to visit with your parents from Chuncheon?
Gil151 Hanok Cafe, Gangwon Hongcheon Main Branch (길151 한옥카페 강원 홍천본점) in Nam-myeon, Hongcheon, is just 20 to 30 minutes by car from my family home in Chuncheon, and I went there on a little date with Mom and Dad. I'd come back to Chuncheon after a long time and wanted to enjoy a day out, just the three of us.
I've already been to every big café worth visiting in Chuncheon, Gapyeong and Gangchon, so I asked my friends whether there were any other hot big cafés around Chuncheon and Hongcheon lately. After some asking around, I ended up heading to "Hongcheon hanok café Gil151." Off to Hongcheon we go, whoosh~!
Gil151 Hanok Cafe: hours, closing day and parking

A 1,800-pyeong hanok garden. Is this really a café?
Gil151 Hanok Cafe is said to be a big hanok (traditional Korean house) café of 1,800 pyeong, set in a mountain valley with hanok buildings, a wide garden, a pavilion (jeongja), two fountains and a waterwheel. The moment we entered the parking lot, the three of us yelled, "What is this~~~? Is this really a café??" You'll get it when you just come see it.
We followed the GPS deep into the valley and were just overwhelmed by the enormous garden and hanok buildings 🥹👍 There was no way not to say "Is this really a café~~~?" And no wonder... they say it's 1,800 pyeong. It looked like the whole mountain space belonged to Gil151. Nothing around, just hanok buildings and cool sculptures sitting there, so it felt like being on a trip?
There was a gorgeous pavilion and, believe it or not, two fountain shows. The wide garden and pretty hanok buildings together made the atmosphere so good. In the yard there was also a waterwheel turning with flowing water, which added that relaxed hanok café mood. The garden is big with things to look at everywhere, so rather than just drinking coffee inside, it's nice to stroll slowly around the yard too.
The big hanok building you see first from the parking lot is the café. The three-story hanok straight ahead seems to be where the owners live. I think the owners are originally experts in the arts and sports field, and they built this space while living here, haha. There was something written on a banner but I can't remember what it said?! Anyway, they seemed like amazing people.
What is the inside of Gil151 like?
Inside, the Gil151 building is a neat, quiet hanok café. There were students studying, couples out on dates, and families out on the outdoor pavilion.
This is the café building you reach first! (Honestly, there was so much to see that I got distracted and wandered around going "Where's the café~?" haha)
Visiting at 4:30 pm: will any bread or cake be left?
We arrived around 4:30 pm and Gil151's bread and cakes were a bit emptied out, which was a shame 😭 We went late, so it couldn't be helped. ⭐️Bakery and cakes⭐️
The carrot cake was so pretty too. I thought the green tea red bean cake looked so rich and delicious, but in our house Mom has the final say~~ so we picked the carrot cake.
The bread looked healthy and nutty too, haha. It smelled toasty and nutty, haha. But we were heading to dinner soon, so we passed~
How does the decaf coffee at Gil151 taste?
At Gil151 we ordered 2 hot decaf café lattes, 1 decaf iced americano and a carrot cake. The coffee had no acidity and a nutty, rich flavor, so even though it was decaf it was delicious. It came on a wood plate with a cute little shovel-shaped fork for digging into the carrot cake, haha. The presentation is so pretty, right?
Maybe because the americano was nutty, rich and not acidic, the latte was also really strong. Even though it was decaf, it was delicious! Totally my taste 🤩⭐️ The windows give a 360-degree panoramic view, so it's open on all sides, with a view into the forest.
Next time I want to come a bit earlier, soak up the sun, and have a coffee sitting in the pavilion, haha
