Weekend fish grill in Uiwang with parents: eel, flounder and mackerel
In short
Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch is a hanok-style Korean restaurant near Baegun Lake in Uiwang, Gyeonggi, serving wood-fired grilled fish, braised fish and rice pot set meals. On a weekend with parents, the writer ordered the boyang (stamina) set for two: grilled flounder, eel and mackerel, braised mackerel, and a rice pot finished as nurungji (scorched rice). The unlimited self-bar side dishes and the large private parking lot made it especially easy, and rice pot sets cost 17,000 to 28,000 won. Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch is a solid pick for a family meal that covers both grilled and braised fish.

Are the self-bar side dishes unlimited?
The self-bar at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch lets you refill side dishes (banchan) as much as you like. The first thing you see when you walk in is a huge self-bar~ It goes so well with the tiled roof look, and you can refill the side dishes!! It was packed with tasty banchan, so I was really looking forward to it.

The self-bar was neatly stocked with lettuce and other wrap vegetables, assorted namul (seasoned vegetables), japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), dotori-muk (acorn jelly), seasoned shishito peppers, jangajji (pickles) and kimchi, all unlimited~ The tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and kimchi pancake were really good too, and there are rice cookers, so even big eaters can fill up. It's already generous, but I think it's especially good for a big family meal!!

What comes in the boyang set for two?
After some deliberation we ordered the boyang set for two! You could feel the home cooking in every basic side dish~ The crunchy doraji (bellflower root) salad, cucumber-pepper salad and pickles whetted the appetite, and the mild japchae went well with the grilled fish!! It felt almost like a holiday feast.

The boyang set was generous from the moment the table was filled T_T The mains are grilled flounder, grilled eel, grilled mackerel, braised mackerel and a rice pot, and being able to taste so many dishes at once is its best point~ In summer you have to nourish your body with Korean food like this!!!

Golden grilled flounder, eel and mackerel were piled on one plate, and it felt hearty just looking at it~ I love fish in general, and it was nice to taste what makes each one different.
Crisp outside and moist inside, with the fish's natural savoriness fully alive. Eating it with the rice pot, the full hanjeongsik-style (Korean course meal) spread made me feel like a Joseon-era nobleman or a king.

How do the grilled flounder, eel and wood-fired mackerel taste?
The first thing I tried was the grilled flounder, golden outside and moist inside~ The flesh came off softly with just a touch of the chopsticks and it was mild~ It even had plump roe inside, a real treat!
The grilled eel had thick, chewy flesh and a rich savory flavor T_T Put a little wasabi on top and enjoy it with the eel sauce that comes with it for a full flavor!!!!
And the grand finale.. the wood-fired mackerel needs no words, it's the best!!! It had just the right amount of oil, moist inside with a crispy skin, a total rice thief (so good you keep eating rice)!!

Braised mackerel and rice pot nurungji
The braised mackerel that came with it was spicy with a deep sauce flavor! The big chunks of radish were soaked through with sauce, and the mackerel was cooked tender, perfect with the rice pot~~
The rice pot was well steamed, glossy and chewy~ You scoop the rice out first, then pour in hot water to make nurungji (scorched rice tea), so even the end of the meal was filling!! A spoonful of the nutty nurungji made the afterglow of the grilled fish last even longer.
