An honest review of Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong, a restaurant near Ilsan Beach in Dong-gu, Ulsan.

Doesn't a hot, spicy bowl of something keep calling to you in this summer heat? My family had exactly that craving, so we went to Daewangam Dol Jjamppong in Dong-gu, Ulsan. We'd been there before with my parents and it was so good that I dragged my sibling along for a repeat visit. We ordered a bunch of different things and everyone was happy!

Thanks to the parking lot right in front of the restaurant, parking was no trouble at all.

Even on a weekday at a late hour, the place was packed with customers — I thought, 'this must really be a good place.'
A restaurant atmosphere that works well for families with kids

Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is spacious overall with generous gaps between tables, so we could sit comfortably without feeling cramped. The interior felt clean and tidy, so it wasn't a stretch to bring a family of four. They even had baby chairs, kids' tableware, and a microwave for warming baby food, considerate touches for families with kids — and we noticed a lot of other family groups there too. It looked like a good spot for anywhere from two people to large groups.
Dol jjajang and dol jjamppong: prices and our order

- Dol Jjajang ₩24,000
- Dol Jjamppong ₩25,000
- Handmade Menbosha ₩15,000
💡 Signature dishes: dol jjamppong and dol jjajang cooked on 250-degree amphibolite stone plates — they stay piping hot for a long time while you eat
💡 What we ordered: dol jjajang x2, dol jjamppong x2, handmade menbosha set of 4 (family of 4 visit)
How did the dol jjamppong and dol jjajang actually taste?
First off, I can guarantee this: the noodles here beat out pretty much any other Chinese restaurant's noodles for that springy bite. The quality is on another level — good enough that you'd be happy just eating the noodles alone!
Dol Jjamppong (stone-plate spicy seafood noodle soup)

The bean sprouts were piled up sky-high, and underneath were generous amounts of shrimp, squid, and onion. It comes out on the stone plate itself, so you can keep eating it at a rolling boil the whole time — that's the whole point!

When we first served ourselves, it tasted like a rich broth-based jjamppong, but as time passed the broth reduced down and it turned into more of a stir-fried jjamppong flavor. It felt like getting two dishes in one bowl, and we all enjoyed being surprised by it.

Dol Jjajang (stone-plate black bean noodles)

This tasted noticeably different from regular jjajangmyeon. The sauce is stir-fried without starch, and because it keeps cooking on the hot stone plate, it starts out soft and rich,

then, as time goes on, it develops a slightly scorched nuttiness. Even my sibling, who's a self-declared jjajang expert, admitted it was seriously good! With both the dol jjajang and dol jjamppong, there's the fun of scraping up the scorched rice stuck to the bottom of the stone plate at the end — and interestingly, the scorched rice from the jjamppong and the jjajang each taste different.
Handmade Menbosha (fried shrimp toast)
Crispy on the outside with springy shrimp meat packed tightly inside — you could tell the texture was different from the moment you cut into it. It worked great as a side, and it seemed like it'd be right up kids' alley too.
The scallion kimchi self-serve bar, barley candy, and yogurt
What a charming bit of service!

At the self-serve corner, there's unlimited scallion kimchi — the perfect partner for jjajang — and unlimited rice, great for mixing with the sauce.

There's also barley candy to snack on while waiting for the food :D

And on the way out, a sweet yogurt to cleanse your palate. The owner's attention to detail is out of this world.
Final thoughts — who should visit
