Ikseon-dong bakery in a sudden shower: onion bagel to work, Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a hanok-fronted bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Ikseon-dong, near Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul, that sells only bread baked that day and reportedly donates leftovers to people in need. After a 5-minute weekday wait, the writer bought an onion bagel and a coffee bread (5,500 won each) and carried them to the office through a sudden shower in a paper bag. Coworkers liked the onion bagel most, the writer preferred the less sweet coffee bread, and Munhwa Bakery is recommended for an Ikseon-dong date or a bakery tour.

You know those days when you suddenly crave bread? Hahaha. Today I'm sharing my bakery pilgrimage to Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), which I heard is one of Seoul's top 3 bakeries, in Jongno!

Where is Munhwa Bakery? Hours and parking
Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 1st floor, between Jongno 3-ga and Ikseon-dong. It's open daily 11:00–19:00, and there is no parking.

A hanok-style bakery in Ikseon-dong: the vibe

Munhwa Bakery has a traditional hanok (Korean-style house) exterior, so it stands out from far away! It's so pretty that foreigners walking by paused and took photos, with a mysterious pull that stops people in their tracks. (It blends in really well with Ikseon-dong.)

How long is the wait at Munhwa Bakery?
The inside is a bit cramped, so only two parties can enter at a time. There wasn't much of a line this day, but on weekends and weekday lunchtimes people really do queue up.. I waited about 5 minutes before going in ^^

Same-day baking and donating leftover bread
I spotted this by chance while waiting: Munhwa Bakery sells only bread made that day, and reportedly donates unsold bread to people in need, such as children who miss meals and elderly people living alone.
In a rough economy like this, I was impressed that such a kind business not only makes tasty bread but also gives back :)
The breads inside Munhwa Bakery
Finally, I'm inside! Wow.. the smell of bread hits you the moment you walk in. If you're a bread lover, it's hard to just walk past, haha.

For such a small shop, I was surprised by how many kinds of bread were on display! Peanut bread, mugwort rice cake bread, cheese bread, red bean bread, salt bread, white bread, sweet potato bread, garlic bread, black sesame bread, squid ink condensed milk bread… too many to count; I agonized for ages and finally picked the coffee bread and the onion bagel, haha.

A sudden shower: glad I bought the paper bag
The staff asked if I needed a paper bag, and I'm so glad I bought one.. a sudden shower hit and I used it, haha (but is it real that the paper bag dries so fast?)

The bread bag that was so pristine got soaked by the rain.. Thankfully, thanks to the titanium(?) paper bag, the bread stayed dry and made it back to the office safely!
Munhwa Bakery onion bagel review (₩5,500)
This is Munhwa Bakery's signature onion bagel 🥯 The price is ₩5,500 💰

The onion bagel comes cut into 4 pieces as in the photo, perfect for a single bite '-' I took it to the office and shared it with coworkers, and it got the best reaction!

You get chewy and crispy at the same time, and the onion cream slathered inside is seriously crazy.. the onion aroma wafts up with a sweet, nutty flavor, and it's honestly so good T_T If you like bagels, you'll be totally satisfied :)
Munhwa Bakery coffee bread review (₩5,500)

This is another signature, the coffee bread ☕ The price is ₩5,500 💰 It has that nutty coffee flavor with just the right sweetness :) I bet it would go really well with an americano!

I'm a little bummed the photos don't really capture how good it looked..T_T Personally, the coffee bread isn't sweet and has a soft texture, so I enjoyed it even more than the onion bagel!
Overall verdict on Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong
A place that made me think the title of one of Seoul's top 3 bakeries isn't there for nothing, a great Ikseon-dong bakery for a Jongno 3-ga date.
What impressed me most while writing this post was Munhwa Bakery's philosophy. Between the steady donations for people in need and the way it serves fresh bread every day, I think that alone puts it on another level from other bakeries! If you're looking for an Ikseon-dong date course, a Jongno 3-ga hotspot or a bakery pilgrimage stop, I strongly recommend Munhwa Bakery in Jongno :)
