A hidden sushi gem I found near Jongak Station — Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch (최우영스시야 종로점). I heard you could get sushi with really thick cuts of fish at a great price, so I had to check it out. They've also got a special set menu that seems perfect for office workers nearby to grab as a lunch group meal 🍣!

Three minutes from Jongak Station: outside and inside the restaurant

Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch is a 3-minute walk from Jongak Station and a 7-minute walk from Gwanghwamun Station, so it's super convenient by public transit, and if you drive, you get 2 hours of free parking at the Tower8 underground lot 🚗

Near the entrance there's a menu board along with a kiosk for takeout orders! Even though it's a pretty newly opened place, there were already quite a lot of office workers from the area.

The interior is clean and modern, and there's even a 6-person table so groups can eat comfortably too.

There's also seating that's great for solo dining, so this gets a thumbs up as a solo-diner spot near Jongak Station and Gwanghwamun ˊᵕˋ

The à la carte sushi prices range from 1,000 to 3,000 won, which felt totally reasonable to add on more!

First up: the clear soup and the handmade soy sauce

The soup came out first and had a clean, light flavor, and the soy sauce is handmade, so unlike regular soy sauce it's not too salty and pairs really well with the raw fish.

We started off ordering the special set and the premium set, and once we knew which pieces we liked best, we ordered more of those à la carte 🤤

Special set, 15 pieces for 19,000 won — the uni gunkan steals the show

The 15-piece special set came out on one plate with a nice variety — white fish, squid, eel, tuna, salmon, egg, raw shrimp, gunkan (battleship roll), and more, and just like people said, the cuts of fish were seriously thick.ᐟ.ᐟ Every piece looked so glossy and beautiful that I got even more excited ✨

The gunkan comes piled high with toppings, but the one loaded with uni (sea urchin roe) was truly the best. Every piece of sushi was well-aged so it melted in my mouth 🥺

Premium set, 17 pieces for 33,000 won — abalone and ankimo

The premium set. Unlike the regular sets, this one comes with fancier ingredients, so it was fun picking through the pieces!

The abalone and ankimo (monkfish liver) sushi were especially amazing. The abalone was a good size and cooked so tenderly there wasn't a hint of fishiness.ᐟ.ᐟ

We were sad it was almost over, so we added more à la carte pieces of the sushi we liked best. Being able to order more of exactly what we wanted at such a good price was really satisfying • • 🍱
