Bueokgan Suwan Branch (부엌간 수완점) is a pasta and pizza restaurant in the Suwan district of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. On a weekday lunch with my parents, we walked in with no wait and ordered the Kung Pao chicken pilaf (22,000 won), seafood tomato pasta (19,000 won) and basil margherita pizza (19,000 won), and even my Korean-food-only dad enjoyed the pilaf. Bueokgan Suwan Branch is a solid Western restaurant in Suwan for a brunch out with your parents.

Suwanjigu Form is a Western-style restaurant in the Suwan district of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, that says it picks seasonal ingredients at the market every day. Returning after a long gap since moving away, the writer found Suwanjigu Form still a satisfying date-night dinner.

Sujebi-topped baby octopus lunch in Ajung-ri, Jeonju: Jjukkumi Sinhwa

Jeonju Jjukkumi Sinhwa Ajung-ri Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in stir-fried baby octopus (jjukkumi), tucked into an alley in Ajung-ri, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju. On a trip to Jeonju, the writer had a late lunch of spicy-level jjukkumi topped with sujebi (hand-torn dough flakes) and a whole pork loin cutlet, then made fried rice from the leftover bowl of rice. The spicy level packs more heat than expected, but wrapping the jjukkumi with perilla leaves, pickled radish and the house garlic sauce makes Jjukkumi Sinhwa a satisfying lunch spot in Ajung-ri.

Ikseon-dong Korean BBQ, pork jowl & neck by the portion: Meongseokjip

Meongseokjip Jongno 3-ga Branch is an aged-pork Korean BBQ restaurant in Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, between the hanok street and the street of pojangmacha (tent bars). On this visit the writer ordered one portion each of pork jowl and flower pork neck, which staff grilled at the table, and ate the meat in lettuce wraps with kimchi and bean sprouts grilled on the same plate; the aged pork had no gamey smell and grew nuttier with every bite. Because Meongseokjip Jongno 3-ga Branch lets you order one portion per cut, it suits anyone who wants to try several cuts.
