Hyehwa board game café with Swiss game Smith and buldak cheese: Hero
In short
Hero Board Game Cafe Daehangno Branch (히어로보드게임카페 대학로점) is a board game café in Daehangno, Jongno, Seoul, about a 2-minute walk from Hyehwa Station Exit 2. After a show, two of us played the Swiss board game Smith and Tekken on the arcade machines, and ate buldak cheese (fiery spicy chicken with melted cheese) and fries. At ₩3,000 per hour or ₩5,000 for weekday unlimited play, we lost track of time. Hero Board Game Cafe is a good fit for couples looking for indoor things to do before or after a Daehangno show.

“Can you really play long for ₩3,000 an hour?”

The café is about 105 m from Hyehwa Station Exit 2. I actually walked it and it took only about 2 minutes. It's also close to Daehangno's main street, so it's perfect before or after a show.

On weekdays it was ₩3,000 for one hour and ₩5,000 for the unlimited pass. If you end up staying longer than planned, unlimited is much better value. We went in saying "let's just play for an hour," and we completely lost track of time?! haha
“It's not just a café with board games.”
The café was bigger than I expected, with tables split into several zones. There were lots of couples on dates, groups of friends and even families, so the mood was lively.

Best of all, it's not only board games: the arcade machines and pool are free to use. You can keep playing Tekken too, so gamers could easily stay a long time.

The private rooms were nice too.
What We Ordered: Buldak Cheese and Fries
Buldak Cheese

The Buldak cheese (spicy fire-chicken noodles topped with cheese) came in a cup, generously covered in cheese and very appetizing. The cheese was melted over the spicy noodles, and when I mixed it up first, the cheese softened the heat, so it was less spicy than I expected.

It's easy to eat a bite at a time between board game turns, so we kept reaching for it. This kind of food is honestly the best when you're playing for hours?! haha
✔️ One-line review: A simple but spicy snack you keep thinking about.
French Fries

The fries came heaped in a big bowl. They were generously seasoned, and the salty flavor hit right away with the first bite. Crispy outside and fluffy inside, they were easy to keep picking at while gaming. Even with two of us, the portion was quite big. I thought, not bad at all?!
✔️ One-line review: Perfect to share while playing board games.
Trying the Popular Game “Smith”

The most fun we had at Hero Board Game Cafe Daehangno Branch was the board game Smith, which comes from Switzerland. We kept mispronouncing things, kept losing and kept getting penalties!! hahaha

Highly recommended as a board game for couples.
Tekken Was Unlimited Too, So We Kept Playing

Partway through the board games we moved to the arcade machines, and Tekken was so much fun. Since it's free to play, it turned into "a few more rounds, just a few more" over and over.

At one point I glanced at my Apple Watch and the noise level was over 90 dB. That means we were laughing and chatting loudly the whole time, which made it even more memorable. It was a day when I laughed until my throat hurt, haha.
Overall Verdict
Hero Board Game Cafe Daehangno Branch isn't just a place for board games. With food, arcade machines and a wide range of games, we were very satisfied.

It's a 2-minute walk from Hyehwa Station, so access is great, and ₩3,000 per hour isn't a heavy cost. If you plan to stay long, the weekday unlimited pass at ₩5,000 seems like a pretty good choice.

Next time I'd like to try a crime scene game too. If you're looking for things to do in Hyehwa, or wondering where to go after a show in Daehangno, Hero Board Game Cafe Daehangno Branch is a satisfying choice.
