Saenae café: ₩1,900 americano, custard walnut cakes, Young Coffee

Young Coffee Jamsil Trizium is a newly opened coffee, dessert and bingsu (Korean shaved ice) café on Baekjegobun-ro 19-gil near Jamsil Saenae (Samjeon Station) in Songpa, Seoul. On a Sunday afternoon visit planned for bingsu, the cool interior prompted a switch to hot coffee, hot chocolate, custard and red bean walnut cakes and a brownie, and the 1,900-won americano impressed with its price and generous size. Young Coffee Jamsil Trizium is a good-value stop for coffee and desserts from early morning to late at night.

Munjeong Japanese with my husband: steak pot rice katsu set, Gome Mui

Gome Mui Songpa Munjeong (고메무이 송파문정) is a Japanese restaurant serving tonkatsu, udon and pot rice on B1 of Tera Tower Building A at Munjeong Station in Songpa, Seoul. After a long, tiring workday, the writer and her husband stopped by Gome Mui for a steak pot rice + tonkatsu set (₩4,900 added to the pot rice) and an abalone pot rice, then finished with nurungji (scorched rice) made with hot water from a tumbler. If you love pot rice, Gome Mui Songpa Munjeong is a good place for a filling meal.

10am brunch café in Wirye: pre-work bulgogi panini at Cafe The Venezia

Cafe The Venezia is a brunch café right beside the Wirye Lake Park walking path in Songpa, Seoul, and one of the few brunch cafés in Wirye that opens at 10am. The writer arrived at opening time before work for the bulgogi panini brunch set for two (27,200 won), which came with a salad piled with mushrooms and generous coffees, and left full. Cafe The Venezia suits anyone who wants an early lake-park-view brunch.

Gamjatang restaurant in Cheongpyeong, open 8 a.m.: Somunnan Haejangguk

Cheongpyeong Somunnan Haejangguk (청평 소문난 해장국) is a 30-year-old gamjatang (pork bone and potato stew) and pork bone hangover soup restaurant near Cheongpyeong Station in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi. On the way to a Gapyeong trip, the writer, her husband and their kids arrived around 11 a.m. and shared a medium gamjatang for 39,000 won; every table filled and a waiting line formed while they were still ordering. The busy kitchen left out the potatoes and fried rice, but generous meat and refillable side dishes made Cheongpyeong Somunnan Haejangguk a satisfying, filling brunch before the trip.

Gapyeong bakery stop after pension checkout: Le Bonbbang Main Branch

Le Bonbbang Main Branch is a natural sourdough bakery on Seokbong-ro in Gapyeong-eup, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi, featured on the Korean TV shows Master of Living (생활의 달인) and Saturday Is Good for Rice (토요일은 밥이 좋아). On the way home after checking out of a Gapyeong pension (guesthouse), the writer stopped at Le Bonbbang and took away the condensed milk rice baguette, which comes out at 10:30, plus the Hangadeuk chestnut loaf, real sweet potato bread, salt bread and egg tarts. Verdict: Le Bonbbang's condensed milk rice baguette is less sweet and crunchier than expected, and it makes a good gift too.

Cheongpyeong butcher: striploin, skirt & chuck flap BBQ, Ari Chuksan

Ari Chuksan (아리축산) is a butcher shop on Gangbyeon-ro in Cheongpyeong, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi, where meat and barbecue supplies such as lettuce wraps and sauces are sold in one place. On a Gapyeong pension trip for a son's birthday, the writer booked on Naver 30 minutes ahead and bought striploin, skirt steak and chuck flap at Ari Chuksan, which added lettuce, shredded scallion, salt and even wasabi, and all the beef melted in the mouth on the pension's electric grill. Ari Chuksan is a Cheongpyeong butcher where buying just the meat gets you a complete barbecue spread.

Olympic Park monkfish stew for a late anniversary dinner: Ttoksuni

Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil Direct Branch is a restaurant specializing in agujjim (spicy braised monkfish) on Wiryeseong-daero in Songpa, Seoul, near Olympic Park and Hanseongbaekje Station. A couple arrived at 8:30pm on their wedding anniversary and ordered the Ttoksuni Agujjim for 2 (medium) at the default Shin Ramyun spice level, and found plenty of monkfish meat with no bones from start to finish. Ttoksuni Agujjim makes a satisfying late dinner even within an hour, and it is a monkfish stew restaurant worth recommending to go with drinks too.

Korean BBQ in Munjeong: short rib plate, naengmyeon, Cheongdam Hwaro

Cheongdam Hwaro (청담화로) is a new charcoal-grill hanwoo (Korean beef) BBQ restaurant on Beobwon-ro near Munjeong Station in Songpa, Seoul. After work on a weekend afternoon, the writer walked in as the first customer and ordered a 600g beef short rib plate for 49,000 won with mul naengmyeon (cold broth noodles) and bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles), and also enjoyed the complimentary muk-sabal (cold acorn jelly soup) and scallion salad. For good-value hanwoo that is open late and takes group bookings, Cheongdam Hwaro is a solid choice near Munjeong Station.

Cheonho Station Korean restaurant, samgyetang with kids: Boseung

Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch (보승회관 천호역점) is a 24-hour haejangguk (hangover soup) and gukbap (rice soup) restaurant near Exit 3 of Cheonho Station in Gangdong, Seoul. On a weekend afternoon, a family with children shared sundaeguk (blood sausage soup), pork bone haejangguk, a mul naengmyeon (cold noodles) and grilled meat set, and samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), and the husband called the bone soup the best of his life. With a varied menu and a spacious dining room, Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a solid pick for a family meal with kids.

Bangi-dong sundaeguk lunch in the rain: sundae-only bowl set, Boseung

Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch is a 24-hour restaurant at 101 Ogeum-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul, specialising in sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup), bone hangover soup and boiled pork rice soup. On a pouring Monday lunch, a couple ordered a sundae-only sundaeguk and a bone hangover soup as a set meal with boiled pork jowl and sundae, plus a side of spicy pollack salad (myeongtae hoe-muchim). With parking out front, 24-hour hours and great flavour, Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch is a Bangi-dong gukbap spot worth visiting rain or snow.

Dongdaemun chicken hot pot with chopped live octopus: Sunhuine

Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is a Korean restaurant near Dongdaemun Market in Jongno, Seoul, serving dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) and many other Korean dishes. The writer's family visited on an early weekend evening with a child and ordered dak hanmari, nakji tangtangi (chopped live octopus) and a kalguksu noodle add-on, and the writer's husband, trying dak hanmari and nakji tangtangi for the first time, was satisfied. With wide tables, high chairs and a self-serve bar, Sunhuine is a solid choice for a family meal with kids at Dongdaemun Market.

Beef BBQ in Munjeong, Seoul: 400g short ribs for two at Soshin

Soshin Charcoal Grill Munjeong Station Branch (소신숯불구이 문정역점) is a charcoal-grill restaurant specializing in special beef cuts on Beobwon-ro 11-gil in Munjeong-dong, Songpa, Seoul. A couple had an early dinner of 400g beef short ribs (₩35,600) with mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) and a bottle of Cheongha for ₩50,000, and there was so much meat they couldn't finish their rice.
