Aewol, Jeju hangover soup lunch for spice-shy diners: Aewol Eomma
In short
Aewol Eomma (애월엄마) is a hangover soup (haejangguk) restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Aewol, Jeju, open from 6am to 3pm. The writer stopped at Aewol Eomma for lunch with her husband and ordered the brisket hangover soup (13,000 won) and the Aewol Eomma hangover soup with both brisket and offal (15,000 won), with fried eggs; the broth was pleasantly spicy yet mild enough for someone who can't handle much heat. With a tidy dining room and soups served in Le Creuset cast-iron pots, Aewol Eomma is a local favourite worth recommending for a hangover breakfast or lunch in Aewol.

If you're looking for a hangover soup place in Aewol, this is the one you have to go to: Aewol Eomma! If you drank last night or just want a hearty Korean meal, go for breakfast or lunch, no question~ From our accommodation it was just past the colorful Deoreok Elementary School, and we stopped by for lunch. Super satisfied, as expected!

Is there parking at Aewol Eomma?
Aewol Eomma is on the ground floor of a three-story building on the main road, and there was room for about 4–5 cars right in front of the shop. We parked right out front too.

What are the dining room and seating like at Aewol Eomma?
The inside is seriously spotless! There are tables for 2, 4 and 6, so it's good for eating solo and for bigger groups too.
I took these photos after a party had left, and the hall stays clean, since they clear tables right away when guests leave. It doesn't feel like food made carelessly, you can feel the care and affection. That's why it's also a local favorite in Aewol 😆

We sat by the window. A real mix of customers came in, from locals to travelers, and everyone was enjoying their food. Our food also came out faster than I expected, and I wanted to try every single dish on the menu.

What's on the Aewol Eomma menu?
Aewol Eomma specializes in hangover soup (haejangguk), and it also sells offal soup, beef radish soup and soft tofu stew. There are side dishes like squid pancake and cold squid soup (mulhoe), so daytime drinkers, go for it! It's even better that it's a place in Aewol where you can have breakfast.

Lots of people were adding extra fried eggs, so I added one too, and all the side dishes were neat and tidy.

Side dishes and table setting at Aewol Eomma
The side dishes were kimchi, pickles (jangajji) and salted seafood (jeotgal), though they may change, so keep that in mind. Everything came in ceramic bowls, which made me feel looked after, and it was the very model of a meal your mom makes 👍👍👍

The soup comes in a Le Creuset cast-iron pot, so it stays hot for much, much longer, and the plating is pretty. Doesn't it look like a regular home dining table rather than a restaurant's?

Is the brisket hangover soup (₩13,000) at Aewol Eomma very spicy?
The brisket soup (차돌해장국) is ₩13,000. It's pleasantly spicy but not very hot, mild enough that even a spice wimp like me could eat it. It was a flavor anyone could enjoy.
There's plenty of brisket in it, and even a grown man gets full. The pot is big, so the portion is generous!

You mix rice into the soup and ladle it into your small bowl. The broth is clean and there's lots of napa cabbage, so it tastes refreshing. As hangover soup should, it really settles your stomach, so definitely go the day after drinking.

How is the Aewol Eomma hangover soup (₩15,000) different from the brisket soup?
The Aewol Eomma soup (애월엄마해장국) is ₩15,000 and has both brisket and offal, so if you like offal, this is your order! My husband had it and said it was delicious, scraping the pot clean down to the bottom haha

The broth base seems the same for both, and the only difference is the main ingredient, brisket or offal. With the fried egg and kimchi we ordered alongside, it tastes amazing! The next table was eating soft tofu stew, and I wanted to try that too~

Aewol Eomma is a Jeju hangover soup spot that really settles your stomach, and I recommend it for breakfast or lunch~ It's also a local favorite in Jeju, so anyone will be satisfied and you won't regret it.
