Looking for hangover soup near our Aewol stay, and picking Aewol Eomma

Aewol Eomma (애월엄마) is a hangover soup (haejangguk) restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Aewol, Jeju. This Jeju trip was two nights, and we drank way too much both nights... so on the last day we needed a seriously rich hangover soup. Our place was in Aewol, so I searched like crazy for good hangover soup spots nearby, and that's how we ended up at Aewol Eomma!

Clean as a new shop, but a local regular's favorite

Both the outside and inside looked clean, like the place had just opened, but I heard it's already a well-known favorite among locals. Honestly, I had a slight bias that Jeju hangover soup tastes best in a bit of a shabby old place, and Aewol Eomma didn't just break that bias, it smashed it to pieces haha

I needed a morning hangover fix, so I went around 11, and the customers who were already eating were drinking makgeolli (rice wine) from that hour, lol. They seemed to be people working in Jeju, and I instantly sensed this was a true local favorite.

The side dishes at Aewol Eomma come out so prettily, homestyle! Like a real mom setting the table at home, with lovely bowls and good flavor... My own mom always insists on serving food in separate dishes at home, in pretty bowls like these haha. Maybe that's why it felt even more like a home-cooked meal.

What does the brisket hangover soup taste like? Broth and portion

What I ordered was Aewol Eomma's brisket hangover soup (chadol haejangguk). It comes in a pretty pot instead of a stone bowl (ttukbaegi). You can really see the owner's sense of style!

It looked so pretty that I secretly worried it might not taste good, but no, never, not at all. Like the saying goes, food that looks good tastes good, and it was even better ㅠㅠ The broth is super rich, and there's a huge amount of meat and dried radish greens (ugeoji)!! By the end I was so full I just fished out the leftover meat to eat!

It seemed like a newly opened place, so why was it so good? Turns out... the owner ran a restaurant elsewhere before and just opened this one recently. I found that out from the Naver intro, haha. Maybe because they simmer domestic Korean beef bones for a long time, the broth flavor is seriously amazing.

Brisket hangover soup vs Aewol Eomma hangover soup: which to choose?

Aewol Eomma hangover soup with offal

The Aewol Eomma hangover soup, served in a green pot, includes offal, and I think I should have ordered this one. It had my favorite gopchang (beef small intestine) and seuji (beef tendon) in it! If you don't like offal, go for the brisket hangover soup; if you eat offal well, I recommend the Aewol Eomma hangover soup!

I sweated like crazy eating this, as if the alcohol was leaving my body.... and my aching stomach got healed too.... And definitely add a fried egg! Eating it together makes everything taste 1.5 times better haha

How much is in the brisket hangover soup

See how much is in the brisket soup? The meat is so plentiful I couldn't grab it all at once, and with all the dried radish greens and glass noodles, it's more than a woman can finish. Still, thinking about it now, I regret it... I should have finished it all, lol

Gopchang and seuji in the Aewol Eomma hangover soup

Even the basic Aewol Eomma hangover soup is outrageously loaded. The gopchang was surprisingly clean-tasting, so much so that I thought a soup with only gopchang would be great too! The seuji had no gamey smell and a nice chew. And as you can see, the amount of ingredients is just......

Ending our last day in Jeju with Aewol Eomma's hangover soup

Aewol Eomma is great for the taste, but the portions are so big it felt like my mom made it for me, which got me a little teary lol. The owner was also super kind, so we wrapped up our last day in Jeju in a really good mood!!!
