Chuncheon mak guksu spot, pork tenderloin with wasabi: Hyeondae Memil
In short
Hyeondae Memil (현대메밀) is a hanok fusion Korean restaurant near Namchuncheon Station in Chuncheon, Gangwon, serving a modern take on mak guksu (cold buckwheat noodles). The writer ordered soy sauce mak guksu and bibim mak guksu (8,600 won each) plus sous vide pork tenderloin suyuk (20,600 won). The tenderloin was best with salt, wasabi and cabbage geotjeori (fresh kimchi) or with minari (water dropwort) ssamjang, and the soy sauce mak guksu was the top dish. With clean flavors and a quiet hanok setting, Hyeondae Memil is a mak guksu restaurant worth recommending for a Chuncheon trip or a date.

What kind of mak guksu restaurant is Hyeondae Memil?
Hyeondae Memil (현대메밀) is a mak guksu restaurant near Namchuncheon Station in Chuncheon. Rather than an ordinary mak guksu place, it's a fusion Korean restaurant that reinterprets mak guksu in a modern way, so it feels clean and unusual! It's in a hanok (traditional Korean house) building with a lovely atmosphere, and the space is tidy and comfortable, so I recommend this famous Chuncheon spot with a wait especially for people visiting Chuncheon or looking for a date place. I'll walk you through parking, the menu and my honest thoughts on the taste, with photos! Let's gooo ♬♥
Getting to Hyeondae Memil from Namchuncheon Station, and parking
Hyeondae Memil is 365 m from Namchuncheon Station Exit 2, a 5-minute walk. For parking, you can use the pedestrian area next to the Hyeondae Memil shopping building and the spot in front of the shop, or otherwise just park on the alley.
Hyeondae Memil's exterior and waiting area
The outside has a countryside-grocery-store vibe (not a convenience store). It's a renovated old house with a friendly green sign. It's written in big, honest letters, "현 대 메 밀", so it's easy to spot, of course! haha

Details next to the outdoor menu board: a little white dog, a yellow hat and a clock haha ♥

Hyeondae Memil is a pretty famous place with a wait, and there was an outdoor waiting area haha. It's made of mismatched chairs, so even that feels like a village hall in the countryside haha. If you don't want to wait, please use a Naver reservation :)

They're open, lol. It's open every day all year round, so you won't make the trip for nothing.
Inside Hyeondae Memil: standard tables, floor-seating platforms and high chairs
The inside is also full of Korean feeling! Rather than looking old, it's been remodeled and feels clean and comfortable. Maybe that's why, for a mak guksu place, the customers were young, and I saw lots of people on dates!

There are cute, old-fashioned props here and there, which makes the place full of memories.

Hyeondae Memil holds about 50 people! Most of it is standard 4-person tables. It's comfortable and has a properly tranquil mood, so it's perfect for anyone visiting Chuncheon.
There's an area with floor-seating platforms (I think?), so it'd be good to come with a child or bring older relatives who find floor seating more comfortable!

Of course, there are high chairs too. The restrooms are inside, separated by gender, and were clean.
Hyeondae Memil menu and prices
The noodle menu runs from soy sauce mak guksu (₩8,600) to mala buckwheat noodles (₩11,600), and the unusual lineup was impressive haha. The sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup) goes from buckwheat hot sujebi (₩10,600) to mala cream buckwheat sujebi (₩13,600). I'd never seen so many buckwheat dishes, so it was fun haha.
One of the best sellers, the truffle potato pancake, is ₩16,600. They also have jeonbyeong (thin savory buckwheat crepes), and judging by what the next table ordered, they looked crispy and delicious ㅠㅠ
The signature boiled pork is the sous vide tenderloin! I thought "안심" meant "don't worry" (안심하세요~), but it's tenderloin (안심) boiled pork ㅎ^^ㅎ If you like fatty cuts, go for the whole pork belly! If you want something light and clean, go for the tenderloin!

For a place open until 8 pm, the range of alcohol was really wide. I especially recommend the buckwheat makgeolli (rice wine) and Soyanggang makgeolli, which go well with the food and give a proper Chuncheon feel!
What we ordered at Hyeondae Memil

- Soy sauce mak guksu ₩8,600
- Spicy mak guksu ₩8,600
- Sous vide tenderloin ₩20,600
- Drink ₩2,000

What does the sous vide tenderloin (₩20,600) taste like?
Hyeondae Memil's sous vide tenderloin is soft tenderloin boiled pork cooked at low temperature! It had little gamey smell and was tender with no greasiness, so it's healthy and easy to eat for all ages.
Salt and wasabi + napa cabbage geotjeori (fresh-seasoned kimchi) is my favorite combo! The minari (water dropwort) ssamjang (dipping paste) was fragrant and delicious too.

Soy sauce mak guksu (₩8,600): the tastiest dish
The soy sauce mak guksu is the one I recommend if you like clean flavors! Chewy buckwheat noodles with a savory, sweet, salty and tangy sauce. Sprouts add a crunchy texture and a spoonful of healthiness. It was the dish I enjoyed most, so I recommend it ><

Is the spicy mak guksu (₩8,600) very hot?
The spicy mak guksu has chewy noodles with a fresh, tangy, spicy sauce! It's not a heavy, hard-hitting kind of spicy but a fresh one with a fruity aroma. I think it would have paired even better with jeonbyeong or the potato pancake. In every way I should have ordered the jeonbyeong, lol;;;
Overall the food is clean-tasting, so it was easy to eat lightly with no strong likes or dislikes!

As we were leaving after a tasty meal, the thoughtful owner handed us mouthwash and mint candy, a neat finish ><
Hyeondae Memil in a nutshell

- Recommended for a date
- Clean hanok-style interior
- Recommended for a Chuncheon trip
- Fusion Korean restaurant
- Unusual mak guksu
- A Chuncheon mak guksu favorite
