Surf shop in Yangyang: after-lesson for repeat beginners, Surf High
In short
Yangyang Surfing Surf High is a surf shop in Hyeonnam-myeon, Yangyang, Gangwon, within walking distance of Ingu Beach, that runs surf lessons and a rooftop guesthouse. The writer had already taken several beginner lessons. On a couple's trip, the writer booked the ₩50,000 beginner after-lesson at Surf High, which included a land lesson on the shaded rooftop and detailed feedback on foot position and angle from an instructor who says he taught surfing in Japan for over 10 years. With clean private shower rooms and boards already waiting by the water, Surf High is an Ingu Beach surf shop worth recommending to beginners and returning surfers.

I'm not even good at it, yet every summer I come down with this sickness where I just have to go surfing, haha.

Today I'm writing about learning to surf at Ingu Beach in Yangyang. This time I went to Yangyang Surfing Surf High (양양서핑 서프하이), a surf shop right in front of Ingu Beach.

Who is the beginner after-lesson for?
Surf High's beginner after-lesson (₩50,000) is for people who have already taken a beginner lesson. Like me, you've done a few beginner lessons, so you don't need the basic theory or posture basics again, and you just need more practice in the water. A compact posture correction on land, then the rest of the time filled with in-water coaching, which is honestly a plus!!
If you can't decide which lesson to take, I recommend calling ahead to ask and book. They explain everything super kindly on the phone,,

What happens when you arrive at Surf High?
When you arrive at the cute Surf High shop on the first floor, you meet the owner and get an explanation,

then each of you heads to a shower room to change into your wetsuit.

Are the Surf High shower rooms clean?
The shower rooms at Surf High are private and were clean. I've been around a lot for beginner surf lessons: Jeju west, Jeju east, Surfyy Beach, Hajodae, Wave Park and more, and the clean showers here were a real plus,,
Honestly, a lot of surf places have shared showers like a public bathhouse, I've even washed in a shower set up on top of rocks, and many have only a few hair dryers and hair everywhere on the floor T_T,,, This is practically the Wave Park of Ingu Beach,, (towels, plastic bags and hair ties are all provided!)

Where is the Surf High land lesson held?
The land lesson at Surf High is held on the third-floor rooftop of the next building. After changing, you head over to the third floor of the building next door,

and have the land lesson on the rooftop. Usually you put the board down on the beach and practice posture there, but on a hot sandy beach it's hot,, scorching,, and sometimes you're exhausted by the sand before you even get your stance right. Surf High's rooftop has shade, so it was definitely much more comfortable.

Besides the rooftop, the third floor also has a space for basic theory lessons. We skipped the basics that day, but if it's your first beginner lesson, this is where you learn!
Surf High also runs a guesthouse, so one side of the third-floor rooftop is set up as a spot where guesthouse guests and surfers can have a barbecue or a drink and chat.

Before you head out they even hand you a coffee, but since we don't drink coffee, we took iced water, let's goooo. (There are spots decorated like graffiti here and there, so it's good for photos before you get soaked!)

Do you have to carry the board from Surf High to Ingu Beach?
It takes less than 3 minutes from Surf High to Ingu Beach, and there was no need to carry the board. Arrived at Ingu Beach! (Honestly it took less than 3 minutes)

Ah, the really great thing about Surf High,, you don't have to carry a board from the shop to the sea. The boards are just there on the beach T_T Any woman who has surfed knows longboards are bigger and heavier than you'd think, and dragging one for 5 minutes from the shop to the water leaves your arms already in tatters, but here you just pick one up from the beach and float it. You don't know how comfortable that is until you've tried it,,
I think that's generally how it is at Ingu Beach, but anyway, I just love it, okay?

How was the coaching from the Surf High instructor?
The instructor at Surf High apparently taught surfing and even ran tours in Japan for over 10 years, and maybe that's why, but this was the most helpful and kindest coaching I've had so far. Then the real lesson started! I have no photos from the lesson because I was so focused;;; T_T
Before, I'd only get coaching like "lower your center of gravity" and "look ahead," but at Surf High I got detailed feedback on foot position, angle and width, on what was good about each take-off and what to try next time. The instructor also told me when to come if I want to surf properly, and what to say next time when learning from someone else,,
There weren't many waves so I couldn't really ride, but the instructor made it so fun that time flew, and I had plenty of fun!

Can you surf freely after the lesson?
After the Surf High lesson you can just play with your board until 7 pm. The instructor said that when waves are small, practicing paddling and controlling the board with your legs is important too, so I floated on the board the whole time practicing and playing, and for beginners this is actually just right,,,

What's the Ingu Beach vibe after surfing?
Of Yangyang's Surfyy Beach, Hajodae, Gisamun and Ingu Beach, Ingu seemed the most lively(?), with plenty to do after surfing. On the way to change afterward there was a free Cass Zero tasting, so I had a cup.
We were on a couples trip, so we quietly ate dinner and scurried back to our room, but if you come with friends, I think you could do it all in one go: surf at Ingu Beach and party at night.

If you're coming to try surfing at Ingu Beach in Yangyang, I recommend Yangyang Surfing Surf High.
