Uhwa Gopchang (우화곱창) is a gopchang (grilled intestine), makchang and daechang grill in the Dunsan-dong eating alley of Seo-gu, Daejeon; it opened in 2019 as Hyoja Makchang and later changed its name. The writer had 2 servings of the Uhwa mixed platter (23,000 won per 200g serving) and flying fish roe fried rice, and liked that the offal arrives pre-grilled, the owner grills it at the table, the side dishes are refillable and the basement parking is free for 2 hours. For a work dinner or outdoor drinks in Dunsan-dong, Uhwa Gopchang is an easy choice for both taste and service.

Cheongju diner Sunday dinner with a kid: Toowoomba cutlet at Bunnys

Bunnys Restaurant (버니스) is a 1990s American family-restaurant-style Western restaurant on Seongan-gil in Cheongju, Chungbuk, right behind the CU Multiplex building. Two adults and a preschooler visited Bunnys around 5 p.m. on a Sunday, shared the ₩34,900 couple set of mushroom cream pasta, Toowoomba-sauce pork cutlet and Monte Cristo, and got a free 1-liter grapefruit ade for writing a receipt review. Bunnys is a charming, good-value Cheongju diner, but CU Multiplex parking is free for only 1 hour, then ₩1,000 per 10 minutes.

Burger date spot in Tanbang-dong, Daejeon: 3 signatures at Buggies

Buggies Tanbang is an authentic American-style handmade burger restaurant in Tanbang-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, in front of Hanuri Apartments. Two people had the full course there: the cheeseburger, avocado burger and Godfather burger, plus fries and sweet potato fries topped with vanilla ice cream, with sets priced from ₩12,800 to ₩14,800, and every burger was juicy and well balanced. Buggies Tanbang feels even more reasonably priced than it did five years ago, making it a great burger date spot in Tanbang-dong.

Cake painting café in Seongan-gil, Cheongju: capybara cake at Exit 3

Exit 3 (3번출구) is a cake painting (cake decorating) café on the B1 floor next to the old Cheongju Station park on Seongan-gil in Sangdang-gu, Cheongju. The writer and a 7-year-old ordered a size 1 painting cake (35,000 won) and an iced americano, then traced a capybara drawing that a beam projector, brought over by the Exit 3 owner, shone onto the cake. Exit 3 is an offbeat Cheongju date café where you can have a great time with your child whether you are a skilled artist or can't draw at all.

Cheongju naengmyeon with house-made sweet potato noodles: Ojangdong

Ojangdong Heungnamjip Cheongju Branch is a Korean restaurant on Danjae-ro in Namil-myeon, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, specializing in hanwoo gukbap (Korean beef and rice soup) and Hamheung-style naengmyeon (cold noodles), about 15 minutes by car from Daecheong Dam and Cheongnamdae. On a return visit around 2 p.m. on a weekday, the writer ordered hanwoo gukbap, hoe bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles with raw fish) and a mixed naengmyeon topped with skate sashimi and beef suyuk (boiled beef slices), and was pleased with the Gyeongsang-style beef bone broth and the chewy house-made noodles of 99% sweet potato starch. With a large private parking lot and a 50-seat second floor available to rent, Ojangdong Heungnamjip Cheongju Branch is a solid pick for a family meal with parents.

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Sintanjin Branch (화덕으로간고등어 신탄진점) is a grilled fish restaurant with a 500°C oven in Sangseo-dong, Daedeok, Daejeon. The writer ordered the oven-grilled mackerel set, minari (Korean water parsley) fish roe stew and the kids' tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) set, plus the unlimited salad bar. The mackerel had no fishy smell and was crisp outside and moist inside, and the minari roe stew was spicy and refreshing. With a large private car park, high chairs and clean indoor restrooms, Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo is a dependable Sintanjin spot for family meals and group gatherings.

On a late-evening visit to Café The Corner, the writer had a hot decaf americano and a ₩17,000 apple mango bingsu (shaved ice dessert), and the soft milk snowflake ice and the full-bodied decaf with no off-flavors stood out. Daejeon Western restaurant with house-made jambon pasta: THE MUA

THE MUA is a newly opened pasta and Western restaurant near Tanbang Elementary School in Tanbang-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Three of us ordered the lobster croquette, the homemade jambon (French-style ham) pasta and the saffron salmon risotto, and the gently smoky house-made jambon and the crispy lobster croquette stood out most. The chef-owner also came out to say goodbye after the meal. THE MUA is a new Tanbang-dong favorite that gets the atmosphere, the flavor and the ingredients right.
