Sokcho noodle restaurant: potato pancake and suyuk for two, Topgol

In short

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch (속초탑골막국수 본점) is a makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant on Haeoreum-ro 188beon-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. On day 2 of a Sokcho trip, two people shared perilla oil makguksu, gamja-jeon (potato pancake) and a 1-person serving of suyuk (boiled pork slices) for dinner. The mild, nutty perilla oil noodles with the potato pancake and suyuk made a filling meal, and this three-dish combo at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu is worth ordering for two.

What did two people order at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch?

At Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch (속초탑골막국수 본점), the two of us ordered three things to share: perilla oil makguksu, potato jeon and a 1-person suyuk. It was the evening of day 2 of our Sokcho trip, and after some debate over what to eat, we ended up here.

Sokcho has so many great makguksu (buckwheat noodle) places that choosing was hard, but this time we decided to have a clean bowl of makguksu together with suyuk (boiled sliced pork) and potato jeon (potato pancake).

  • Perilla oil makguksu
  • Potato jeon
  • 1-person suyuk

Just those three! We shared everything between the two of us, and to cut to the chase, we picked the combination really well. Compared with eating makguksu alone, adding potato jeon and suyuk made it far more filling and gave us a wider range of flavors.

What are the parking and atmosphere like at Topgol Makguksu Main Branch?

There is a large parking lot right next to the restaurant, so if you search the address and head over, parking is easy ^^ The interior is clean and fairly spacious!

Walking in, we felt the comfortable, unfussy atmosphere typical of a makguksu specialist. Many restaurants in Sokcho have a strong tourist-spot vibe, but Topgol felt like a place you can easily walk into just for a bowl of makguksu.

We picked our menu as soon as we sat down. At first we actually considered mul makguksu (cold broth noodles) or bibim makguksu (spicy mixed noodles), but that day we were craving something nutty, so we settled on perilla oil makguksu! Since makguksu alone seemed a bit lacking, we also ordered potato jeon and a 1-person suyuk.

The side dishes were basic ones that go well with makguksu, and every single one was delicious?!

How does the perilla oil makguksu at Topgol taste?

The perilla oil makguksu at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu was a mild style, neither spicy nor salty, where the nutty flavor comes first. 🥢 It was the dish I was looking forward to most. The moment it arrived, a faint nutty perilla oil aroma rose up, and since I personally love this style of makguksu, my expectations were high.

I mixed the noodles well with the seasoning and took a bite: not harshly spicy or salty at all. The nuttiness of the perilla oil and the plain flavor of the buckwheat noodles go together so well that my chopsticks kept going back! It didn't start out with a heavy, strongly seasoned taste, so it never felt overwhelming.

Many people think of tangy, spicy bibim makguksu when they hear makguksu, but I actually found this mild, nutty perilla oil version quite appealing. When you eat a lot around Sokcho, food can feel quite intense overall, so having something mild in the middle was even better.

Is the potato jeon worth ordering with makguksu?

The potato jeon at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu was golden on the outside and mild and chewy inside, so it went well with the perilla oil makguksu. 🥔 You'd think potato jeon tastes about the same anywhere, but once you eat a well-made one, there's definitely a difference, right?

Since the makguksu is nutty and mild, the potato jeon paired with it really well. It's best while hot, so I grabbed a piece the moment it came out. 😆

If ordering only makguksu feels like a shame, I'd recommend adding one potato jeon. There were two of us, and shared with the makguksu, the amount was just right.

Can you order a 1-person suyuk at a makguksu restaurant?

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch lets you order suyuk in a 1-person portion, so even two people can add it to their makguksu without feeling overloaded. 🥩 Surprisingly, the 1-person suyuk was the dish we were most satisfied with.

Many places require suyuk orders for two or more, so if you want suyuk at a makguksu restaurant, it can feel like a lot when there are only two of you. Being able to order a 1-person portion made it a great side for the makguksu.

The suyuk was boiled tender and went nicely with the makguksu. Rather than eating the suyuk on its own, having it with a bit of the noodles was much better. One bite of perilla oil makguksu, then one slice of suyuk: this combo worked better than I expected. With the potato jeon too, there was the fun of alternating between everything. 😊

Going as a pair? I recommend this combination! 🍜

If two of you go to Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch, I recommend ordering perilla oil makguksu, potato jeon and a 1-person suyuk to share. Here's a summary of what we tried.

  • Perilla oil makguksu → recommended if you like nutty, mild noodles!
  • Potato jeon → a great side for makguksu. Best eaten while hot.
  • 1-person suyuk → an easy order when two of you want suyuk too.

Makguksu alone can feel a bit plain, but with potato jeon and suyuk, the spread was quite substantial.

When you crave makguksu in Sokcho ❤️

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu seemed like the place to remember when you want a mild, nutty meal rather than something intense. There was a lot to eat on this Sokcho trip, but I especially liked the perilla oil makguksu.

The perilla oil's nutty richness on top of the mild buckwheat noodles made it clean and easy to eat, and with potato jeon and suyuk ordered alongside, it was plenty for a full meal.

If you want makguksu in Sokcho but fancy something a little different from mul makguksu or bibim makguksu, give the perilla oil makguksu a try. And if there are two of you, I'd suggest ordering like I did: perilla oil makguksu + potato jeon + 1-person suyuk. 😊

If you're looking for a filling but not overwhelming meal on a Sokcho trip, it's worth a stop. Next time, I'd like to try the other makguksu dishes too. 🌿 If you're hunting for a makguksu restaurant in Sokcho, remember Topgol Makguksu Main Branch!
