What is the atmosphere at Donbegi Gwang-an Branch like?

Donbegi Gwang-an Branch (돈베기 광안점) is a two-floor aged pork charcoal-grill restaurant in Millak-dong, Gwangalli, and it allows dogs. I went to Gwangalli for some fresh air and stopped by Donbegi, which is famous for its great service. I'd heard so much about the quality of the meat that my expectations were high, and to say it upfront: it exceeded them.

The exterior looked clean and the inside was really pleasant. Split across the 1st and 2nd floors, it's quite a big place. The tables are spaced out, so you can eat comfortably without feeling cramped. Even though I came in the early evening, plenty of people had already taken their seats. Since it's a dog-friendly restaurant, I saw quite a few people who had been walking their dogs on Gwangalli beach and dropped in for a meal.

BBQ places where you can comfortably bring a dog aren't common, so with this much space, I figured it's a perfect choice for dog lovers. There were lots of families too, and the interior is kept so tidy that it's a place nobody would mind coming to, whoever you bring.

What side dishes come with the pork omakase?

Order the pork omakase, Donbegi's signature, and the table is set with bean sprout soup, scallion salad (pajeori), pickles and seasoned pollock roe (myeongran-jeot). I looked over the menu and ordered the pork omakase right away.

The side dishes arrived shortly after, and the lineup was really generous. The bean sprout soup comes as standard and is perfect for cleansing your palate before the meat is grilled. The crunchy scallion salad isn't overseasoned, just sweet and spicy, so it should cut right through the richness of the meat. There were also pickles that go well with pork and salty pollock roe, all neatly laid out.

Self-serve bar and the charcoal

If you run out of side dishes, there's a self-serve bar on one side of the restaurant where you can help yourself without feeling awkward about asking, which was really convenient. The area around it was spotless, as if they wipe and restock it constantly, so I trusted the hygiene too.

While I was tasting the side dishes one by one, the charcoal came in, and even at a glance its condition was seriously impressive.

With strong heat and clean, high-quality charcoal, a faint smoky aroma soaks into the meat as it grills, which brings out much more flavor.

How does the 480-hour aged pork omakase taste?

Donbegi's pork omakase comes with several cuts of pork neatly arranged, and the staff grill all of it themselves from start to finish. The omakase caught my eye from the moment it arrived. Seeing the bright pink color and the moderate marbling, I could feel the quality even before it was cooked. No matter how good the meat is, the taste depends on who grills it, so having it cooked skillfully at exactly the best moment was so easy and comfortable.

The meat sizzled on the grill giving off a savory smell, and I could actually see how full of juice it was. I tried the first cooked piece and the moment it hit my mouth, I couldn't help exclaiming.

Apparently Donbegi uses meat aged for 480 hours. Maybe because of that long aging, the meat was really tender and savory juices burst out with every bite. There was nothing tough at all, so I thought it would be great for elderly people with weak teeth or small kids too.

I tried the cuts one by one, and each had a different texture and slightly different flavor, so picking among them was a lot of fun. Some cuts were chewy with a satisfying bite, while others were so tender they melted in my mouth.

How were the doenjang stew and the bomb egg custard?

The doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and egg custard (gyeran-jjim) I ordered on top of the meat both came in earthenware pots. The stew was rich and nutty, and the custard had a bomb-like look and a mild flavor. They showed up at a great moment, right in the middle of the meal. The stew arrived bubbling in its pot, and the savory smell alone was something special.

I took a spoonful of the broth and the seasoning was just right, deep and rich. It was also generously packed with tofu, zucchini, onion and more, which made it great mixed with rice. Unlike the stews at ordinary restaurants where all you taste is MSG, this one had a hearty, nutty taste like countryside doenjang, so I kept going back for more. The egg custard, the "bomb" version, also grabbed my attention. The soft custard rose precariously above the pot and had a properly fluffy, wobbly texture.

The custard was moist all the way through, not salty but mild and savory, so it was perfect to have between bites of meat. From the main meat to the side dishes to the stew and custard, nothing was lacking, and the whole meal came together in perfect harmony.

What goes well with aged pork here?

Donbegi's aged pork is good with a little seasoned pollock roe on top, with pickles or scallion salad, or just dipped in salt. You can enjoy everything from mild cuts to ones with a deep, fatty richness, so there's no time to get tired of it. Putting a little pollock roe on a well-grilled piece made the umami explode, and it paired wonderfully with tangy pickles or scallion salad too. The meat itself is so good that a light dip in salt was great as well. It was clearly on a different level from the meat at ordinary, mass-market BBQ places, and I got to experience that quality fully.

The strong charcoal heat crisps the outside while locking the juices inside, which really seemed to maximize the appeal of the meat.

The staff adjust the heat and place the meat on an oval stone plate so it doesn't burn, and thanks to that careful service I could enjoy even the last piece warm and delicious.

Is Donbegi Gwang-an Branch worth going back to?

Donbegi Gwang-an Branch nails all three: the atmosphere, the friendly staff and, most importantly, the taste of the meat. Thanks to the spacious 1st and 2nd floors, it looked comfortable for group gatherings or company dinners too, and the setup that lets you eat comfortably with a pet is a big plus.

If you want proper aged pork near Gwangalli, I strongly recommend visiting Donbegi. With the comfort of having it grilled for you, you can enjoy the best juiciness. Next time I crave tasty aged meat, I'll definitely return. I felt good all the way out after a satisfying meal, so I'd like to tell my friends about it too.
