On a weekend lunch visit, the writer ordered kimchi stew for 2 and a ₩5,000 steamed egg in an earthenware pot. The meal came with big chunks of meat, whole-leaf kimchi, pot rice that turns into nurungji (scorched rice) and free ramen noodles from the self-serve bar. For a hearty lunch that isn't too spicy, Chung-sil Hoegwan's kimchi stew is a good fit.

Cheonan chicken stew lunch with a kid and toddler cutlery: Sottture

Sottture Dakdoritang (솥뚜레 닭도리탕) is a dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) restaurant in Seongjeong-dong, Seobuk-gu, Cheonan, with a parking lot behind the building and 5,000 won off at lunch or for takeout. Just before Bok-nal (the traditional hottest days of summer), the writer had lunch there with a child: chicken stew with 2 extra chicken-shaped egg toppings, self-serve heart-shaped fried rice and self-serve ice cream, and the staff brought toddler spoons and forks. With a big chicken, plenty of potatoes and rice cakes, and a sweet-spicy sauce like tteokbokki broth, Sottture Dakdoritang suits families eating out with kids.

Gangneung makguksu restaurant with tablet ordering: Samgyori

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch is a dongchimi makguksu (buckwheat noodles in radish water kimchi broth) restaurant in Namhangjin, Gangneung, whose roots go back to a shop opened in Jumunjin in 1976. During a summer vacation, the writer's family waited on site for lunch, ordered mul (cold broth) and bibim (spicy mixed) makguksu with a small boiled pork (suyuk) and buckwheat jeonbyeong by tablet, and poured the dongchimi broth to taste from a mini jar served on the side. Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu is a good fit for Gangneung travelers who want a light lunch and room for dinner.
