Gijang tteokgalbi restaurant: tour-group wait, kids' patty, Dongam
In short
Dongam Tteokgalbi (동암떡갈비) is a handmade tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) Korean restaurant in the Osiria Dongbusan tourist complex in Gijang, Busan. At lunch the family ordered the Dongam tteokgalbi set for 15,000 won, the cheese tteokgalbi set for 18,000 won and the kids' tteokgalbi for 10,000 won, and also ate from a self-bar with tteokbokki, steamed egg and tofu kimchi, plus freshly cooked pot rice and soybean stew with crab. Dongam Tteokgalbi draws tour groups too and ingredients can run out, so go prepared to wait.

"What's the name of that tteokgalbi place in Gijang Osiria where everyone lines up?" "Dongam Tteokgalbi, of course!"

If you come to Osiria in the Dongbusan tourist complex with kids, Dongam Tteokgalbi (동암떡갈비) is a sure bet. The price is reasonable and the handmade tteokgalbi is tasty and nutritious. There's also a self-bar where you can eat as much as you like of crowd-pleasers like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), tofu kimchi and steamed egg. Step in once and you won't be able to get out again, haha.
Dongam Tteokgalbi: thick, juicy tteokgalbi
Dongam Tteokgalbi lunch wait in Gijang: how long?

Packed, as expected. Weekday or weekend, this Gijang lunch spot never disappoints. I almost had to wait a whole hour!
Dongam Tteokgalbi has become so famous that tour groups visiting Busan join the lunch line too. If you're really unlucky, you can wait and still miss out because the ingredients have run out.

Dongam Tteokgalbi menu and prices
They brought a menu once we sat down, but I know that ordering late just means the food comes late. So I didn't even look at it and shouted for the Dongam tteokgalbi, the cheese tteokgalbi and the kids' tteokgalbi. It's not my first or second time here, and ordering first is what matters.

Self-bar while you wait: tteokbokki, steamed egg, tofu kimchi
A wait means the tteokgalbi will take a while to come off the grill. That's fine, because Dongam Tteokgalbi has a well-stocked self-bar. Come on, kids, let's go grab what we want.

There's tteokbokki and stir-fried sausage that my daughter loves, steamed egg and tofu kimchi that my son likes, and plenty of other side dishes and ingredients piled high. You can enjoy all of it without limit during your meal. Pretty impressive, right?!

Octagonal tray setting, fresh pot rice and crab soybean stew
Just as the kids and I have filled up on our own picks from the self-bar, the basic setting arrives on an octagonal tray, and it looks wonderfully neat. Yes, this is what a Korean restaurant that does tteokgalbi should look like.

When you order a set at Dongam Tteokgalbi, the rice is pot rice cooked fresh and carried to your table, then carefully scooped into your bowl. I won't even bother explaining how good freshly made rice is. The soybean stew with crab is the finishing touch. All this for ₩15,000 a person, which is why people put up with the line to eat here.

A thick, juicy hunk of meat, Dongam Tteokgalbi. Packed with nutrition.
Kids' tteokgalbi ₩10,000, same size as the adult one

If you come with a child under 10, order the kids' tteokgalbi. It's the same size as the Dongam tteokgalbi adults order. A patty this big for ₩10,000... the owner is so generous! He deserves a flood of customers. (Of course, he already has one and runs several restaurants.)

Finish with 3 kinds of old-fashioned snacks
The self-bar has 3 kinds of old-fashioned snacks, and the kids, who are regulars, take them out in a paper cup. Clearly they know good food. If you plan to eat with children in the Dongbusan tourist complex, Dongam Tteokgalbi will always be a top choice. Just be ready to wait.
