Friday lunch near Daewangam Park, Ulsan: scorched-rice stone jjajang

Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant on Ilsanjin 5-gil in Dong-gu, Ulsan, specialising in jjamppong and jjajang served on a hot stone plate. Arriving around 1pm on a Friday after a walk through Daewangam Park, we waited behind 1–2 groups, then ordered the scorched-rice stone jjajang with the dontang & chitang set for 38,000 won and added a whole squid for 5,000 won. Stone jjamppong is the house favourite, but the chewy noodles of the scorched-rice stone jjajang eaten with green onion kimchi were the dish we remembered most.

Ulju, Ulsan café where bread sells out by 2pm: MUG black latte

MUG (카페 먹) is a large bakery café surrounded by nature at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. Arriving at 2pm on a weekday, most of the bakery case was already sold out, but the leftover blueberry cream cheese cinnamon roll (6,800 won), MUG black latte (7,500 won) and MUG lemon smoothie (7,500 won) all tasted great, and the exhibition space and grassy lookout were worth the walk. If you have your heart set on a particular bread at MUG, come earlier than the afternoon.
