Friday lunch near Daewangam Park, Ulsan: scorched-rice stone jjajang
In short
Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant on Ilsanjin 5-gil in Dong-gu, Ulsan, specialising in jjamppong and jjajang served on a hot stone plate. Arriving around 1pm on a Friday after a walk through Daewangam Park, we waited behind 1–2 groups, then ordered the scorched-rice stone jjajang with the dontang & chitang set for 38,000 won and added a whole squid for 5,000 won. Stone jjamppong is the house favourite, but the chewy noodles of the scorched-rice stone jjajang eaten with green onion kimchi were the dish we remembered most.

On the second morning of our Ulsan trip we walked around Daewangam Park, then headed to Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong for lunch.

It's about 5 minutes by car from Daewangam Park, so it was easy to add to our travel route. With 'dol jjamppong' right there in the name, I obviously planned to order dol jjamppong... but then the huge debate began: dol jjamppong or dol jjajang? Haha.
Then I saw the pa-kimchi (green onion kimchi) that came out as a basic side dish, and my heart instantly tipped toward dol jjajang 🤣 Spoiler: zero regrets choosing dol jjajang!!!

From the chewy noodles to the pairing with pa-kimchi to the scorched rice at the end, I enjoyed this place so much I want to go through it in detail :)

How long is the Friday lunch wait?
We arrived at Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong a little after 1pm on a Friday. Since it was a weekday and slightly past peak lunch hours, I figured we'd walk straight in — but there were 1-2 groups waiting ahead of us. Oh... this place is popular, huh? Haha. Still, the wait wasn't long before we got seated.
When we first walked in, the restaurant was nearly packed, but by the time we finished eating and left, the lunch rush had passed and things felt much more relaxed.
Since it was busy even on the Friday I visited, if you're going on a weekend or during peak lunch hours, it's worth factoring in a possible wait :)
The Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong menu and what we ordered
Here's what we ordered:

- Scorched Rice Dol Jjajang + Dontang & Chitang Set ₩38,000
- Whole squid add-on +₩5,000
- Handmade green grape ade ₩5,000
That's what we went with!!

Daewangam Dol Jjamppong serves jjamppong and jjajang on a hot stone plate. The most popular dish is dol jjamppong, so at first I naturally planned to order that too.

But then... I spotted the pa-kimchi that came as a basic side dish 👀
The moment 'jjajang + pa-kimchi' flashed through my head, I thought 'ah, this is dol jjajang.' Haha, and after all that deliberation, I went with the scorched rice dol jjajang!
What makes scorched-rice stone jjajang different?
Apparently Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong's dol jjajang is cooked without starch, and made fresh to order!

I figured cooking to order might take a while, but it actually came out faster than expected!
It arrived on a sizzling hot stone plate piled generously with jjajangmyeon, seafood, vegetables, and meat! Coming out still bubbling, it looked totally different from an ordinary jjajangmyeon haha. The stone plate also kept it warm the whole time we ate, which was a nice bonus.
A taste between jjajangmyeon and Chapagetti?
My first thought after one bite: 'this tastes like somewhere between jjajangmyeon and Chapagetti?' Haha.

It was a bit different from typical jjajangmyeon.

Rather than the usual thick, heavy jjajang sauce, it felt a bit lighter while still tasting distinctly of jjajang!

It felt familiar but oddly different, and I kept going back for more. But what I fell for most here... the noodles!!!!! Seriously, the noodles are perfect haha.
Noodles that stayed chewy to the last bite
Since it stayed sitting on the hot stone plate the whole time, I worried the noodles might get soggy.
But they stayed chewy the entire meal! Compared to regular jjajangmyeon, they even had a bit of that springy, bouncy texture like jjolmyeon noodles.
I'm not sure if it's because of the starch-free cooking method, but the noodles barely got mushy even by the end, which I loved. I'm someone who really likes chewy noodles, so these were exactly my type 🤍
If I had to name the biggest reason I'd order dol jjajang again, it would honestly be the noodles.
Stone jjajang with green onion kimchi: the combo to try
And here's the (culprit?) pa-kimchi that made me give up on dol jjamppong haha.

Take a bite of dol jjajang, top it with pa-kimchi, and... that's it!!!!! Why do these go together so well 🤣

The sweet, savory jjajang combined with the sharp, refreshing kick of pa-kimchi kept it from ever feeling greasy — I just kept eating.

It was exactly the combo I expected — a perfect match. If you order dol jjajang, definitely try it with pa-kimchi. Approved combo 👍
Is the whole squid add-on worth 5,000 won?
We added whole squid to our dol jjajang. It already comes with seafood, vegetables, and meat, so adding squid made it even more filling.
The plump, chewy squid paired really well with the jjajang sauce haha. If you like seafood, I'd recommend adding it :)
Finishing with the scorched rice at the bottom
By the end, you really understand why it's called 'scorched rice dol jjajang.' Scorched rice lines the bottom of the stone plate, soaked in jjajang sauce, and eating that at the end after working through the noodles... pure happiness haha.
From the chewy noodles to the seafood and pa-kimchi to the scorched rice finish, there was a lot of fun to be had within just one dish.
The dontang & chitang set: order it together
An unexpected dark horse (?): the Dontang & Chitang Set! It comes with pork cutlet and fried chicken. Honestly, I figured the dol jjajang would be the main event and this would just be a side.
But... the pork cutlet and chicken were actually this good!! Haha. Crispy on the outside, and they went surprisingly well eaten alongside the dol jjajang.

I usually order sweet and sour pork at Chinese restaurants, but this time I enjoyed this just as much — actually, maybe even more haha.
If you're visiting with a group, I'd recommend ordering the Dontang & Chitang Set alongside the stone-plate dishes rather than just sticking to those.
Handmade green grape ade, 5,000 won
Eating hot stone-plate food, a cold drink really hit the spot.

We ordered the handmade green grape ade, which was sweet and refreshing — great for sipping between bites.

At the time of our visit, there was also a promotion offering a free ade with a Naver receipt review. Promotions can change, so it's worth checking with the store when you visit :)
Stone jjamppong or stone jjajang: which to order?
If it's your first visit like it was mine, this is probably the biggest dilemma haha. Dol jjamppong or dol jjajang? Daewangam Dol Jjamppong's signature dish is dol jjamppong, so I'm still curious about that flavor myself.

But speaking as someone who's tried the dol jjajang firsthand... you won't regret ordering it! Haha. Especially if you love chewy noodles or the jjajang + pa-kimchi combo, I'd recommend the scorched rice dol jjajang!
Next time I come back, I'll probably have the exact same debate — 'dol jjajang again?' or 'should I try dol jjamppong this time?' Haha.
A lunch spot in Ilsanji, Ulsan to pair with Daewangam Park
We visited for lunch after touring Daewangam Park that morning.

It was only about 5 minutes by car, so we didn't have to travel far. It's also close to Ilsan Beach, making it easy to combine into a Dong-gu, Ulsan travel route!

If you're looking for a lunch spot after touring Daewangam Park in the morning, following our route of Daewangam Park → Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is a good idea :) I'll cover Daewangam Park parking and the walking course in detail in a future post!
Final verdict on Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong
We stopped by Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong for lunch after touring Daewangam Park!

I went in for the famous dol jjamppong, but ended up won over by the pa-kimchi and chose the scorched rice dol jjajang instead — and it was way better than I expected haha. Especially the noodles, chewy through and through — totally my type!

The pairing with pa-kimchi was great, and from the whole squid to the final scorched rice, every bite was good. On top of that, the Dontang & Chitang Set, which I hadn't expected much from, was delicious too — very satisfying 👍
If I lived in Ulsan, I'd probably go every week 🥹🥹 I want to eat the dol jjajang again, but next time I definitely want to try the popular dol jjamppong too.
If you're traveling around Daewangam Park or Ilsan Beach and looking for something special to eat nearby, this place is worth a visit :)
