Busan snack pub in Seomyeon with huge tteok-twi-sun: 5 Budu Twigimjip

In short

5 Budu Twigimjip (5부두튀긴집) Seomyeon is a retro-style fried food and Korean snack pub in Bujeon-dong, near Seomyeon Station in Busan. The writer ordered tteok-twi-sun (tteokbokki, fritters and sundae, a Korean blood sausage) with extra cheese and Busan fish cake; the portion was surprisingly generous, the sundae was soft and the large fritters were good, especially the Haenam sweet potato cheddar fritter. For a proper Korean snack spread in Seomyeon, whether as a first or second round, 5 Budu Twigimjip is a great fit.

Today I was craving fried food and spicy tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes in chili sauce) for the first time in ages! So I headed to 5 Budu Twigimjip (5부두튀긴집) in Seomyeon.

The exterior and the hoe-shaped door handle

When you arrive, the big word "twigimjip" (fried-food house) on the sign makes the place easy to spot. It has a bit of a vegetable-garden vibe.

They're so committed to the concept that the handle is wonderfully quirky `⁽˙ᵕ˙⁾´ The fun started right at the entrance with the door handle: it's not an ordinary handle but one shaped like a hoe (a garden tool), which I found funny and fascinating.

What's the atmosphere like inside?

Overall, the Seomyeon branch feels like an old-school Korean snack shop, with a retro mood: a grandmother's photo, vintage posters and so on.

On the wall hangs a photo of Grandma Odubu, who reportedly made fritters from seasonal wild greens and ingredients she gathered by hand at Busan Port's Pier 5, a warm space full of memories.

The name and concept of 5 Budu Twigimjip carry that meaning, an effort to recreate in a modern way the warmth and flavor she shared back then.

Nostalgic prize-draw review event at 5 Budu Twigimjip

Review event: nostalgic prize draw

There's a review event on right now, and of course it's a quirky one: a nostalgic prize draw! Get a receipt, write a Naver Place review, and you get one draw. You pull anything from 1st to 5th prize. Us... sadly, we got 5th.

The month's recommended fritter was the "seasonal assorted wild greens fritter." There are lots of tasty menu items, and seasonal fritters change through the year, so every visit seems to be a little different.

This is the full shot of the tteok-twi-sun (tteokbokki, fritters and sundae, Korean blood sausage) we ordered. The portion was not just generous but "huuuge" haha, I was really surprised ヾ(^。^*)♪~

Also, unlike the other drinks, if you order cola they bring it in a bottle like this.

Tteokbokki: extra cheese is a must

In the tteok-twi-sun set, the tteokbokki is practically the main dish. It's no exaggeration to say I came for the tteokbokki at 5 Budu Twigimjip...

Extra cheese on the tteokbokki is a must for us! And since I like fish cake more than rice cakes, I ordered extra Busan fish cake.

The sauce is moderately thick, sweet with a slight kick. A style anyone can enjoy without worry!

And then the fritters and sundae! The fritters here are big and the sundae is just as generous. Today was a total binge day ʅ( ․ ⤙ ․)ʃ

Four sauces: tartar, curry powder, soy sauce and chili

There are 4 sauces: tartar sauce, curry powder, soy sauce and chili sauce. They aren't store-bought; apparently they make them in-house. Wow.

Soft, chewy sundae at 5 Budu Twigimjip

About the sundae: I don't do well with dry, crumbly food, but at 5 Budu Twigimjip every part of the sundae (except the liver) was soft rather than dry, so it was easy to eat. Moist and chewy 👏🏻('‎ࠏ' )

Sundae dipped in tteokbokki sauce

The Korean golden rule: dip your sundae in the tteokbokki sauce. Of course it was delicious. Dip it generously!

Fritters made up of gourmet fritters, squid, pepper and shrimp

Which fritter is the best at 5 Budu Twigimjip?

The fritters in the tteok-twi-sun here are 2 Haenam gourmet fritters, 1 squid fritter, 1 really big pepper fritter and 1 shrimp fritter. (It can get confusing, heads up!)

My number one is the fritter made with Haenam honey sweet potato topped with cheddar cheese, seriously delicious. The squid fritter with its chewy inside was also a thumbs-up.

Slightly spicy pepper fritter at 5 Budu Twigimjip

My boyfriend's pick is the pepper fritter. It's slightly spicy, so dipping it in tartar sauce is great. They say 5 Budu Twigimjip researched and prepared everything themselves, from the fillings to the batter flour blend.

And there are crackers inside the fritter, too. They were nice as a palate cleanser while chatting. It doesn't feel awkward for group gatherings or drinking solo, and it looks good both as a hearty first round and as a second-round stop.
