Pasta restaurant in Sangmu, Gwangju: post-gym late dinner, Bueokgan

In short

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch (부엌간 상무점) is a pasta, risotto and pizza restaurant on Seogwangju-ro in Sangmu, Seo-gu, Gwangju. After work and a gym session, the writer ordered shrimp rosé pasta, abalone cream risotto, kung pao chicken pilaf and truffle mushroom pizza à la carte (20,000–22,000 won each), and the abalone cream risotto was the clear favourite of the four. The BUUK sign and entrance can be confusing on a first visit, but with the review-event pastry pie, Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a very satisfying Western-style restaurant in Sangmu.

If you follow your GPS, it takes you straight to the Bueokgan parking lot. But this Sangmu pasta favorite can be confusing the first time you go.

English-only sign of Bueokgan Sangmu Branch

The sign is only in English, so I walked right past it at first, haha. Turns out that was Bueokgan! So don't miss the BUUK sign, everyone, haha.

Building and entrance area of Bueokgan Sangmu Branch

At first I didn't go in through the front entrance but into the building on the parking lot side, and they told me that wasn't the entrance, so I had to find the main door. I think it's a bit confusing on a first visit, haha, sob.

Seating and atmosphere at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch

Bueokgan has outdoor tables, and inside there were a huge number of tables too. We went in the evening so we couldn't eat outside, but the weather isn't super hot these days, so I bet eating outdoors during the day would be really atmospheric and nice. Next time I want to relax at an outdoor table!!

I came late in the evening after work and the gym, and there were quite a few groups gathering!!

What's on the menu at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch, and how much?

The menu was seriously varied. If you're thinking "I don't know what to eat!", you can just pick a set menu like the couple set or the family set, haha.

There were things in the sets we didn't want, so we chose à la carte. We skipped the salads and sides, haha.

Spread of pasta, risotto, pilaf and pizza

What was the best dish at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch?

Out of the four dishes we ate at Bueokgan, number one was the abalone cream risotto (₩20,000). Ta-da~ our order has arrived. I loved that all the dishes came out at once, haha.

Shrimp rosé pasta

The shrimp rosé pasta is the rosé pasta we all know, so it's perfect if you want something nobody dislikes! And even though it's rosé, it isn't heavy in a bad way, just a good, rich kind of creamy, haha.

Truffle mushroom pizza

The truffle mushroom pizza was smaller than I expected. But the truffle flavor really hit, so I loved it. Though people who don't like truffle might not, sob.

Abalone cream risotto

The abalone cream risotto was number one of the four we ate here!! Seriously delicious, haha. Abalone plus cream can't go wrong, so I scraped the plate clean.

Kung pao chicken pilaf

The kung pao chicken pilaf has chicken on top that was really good, and the rice tasted like plain fried rice. The menu lists a spice level so I wondered if it'd be spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all!!

If you're looking for a restaurant with a nice atmosphere in Sangmu, I highly recommend Bueokgan!! The menu is varied so you can pick to your taste, and from pasta to risotto, pizza and pilaf, I was very satisfied overall, haha.

The abalone cream risotto in particular was the most memorable dish of this visit, and be sure to get the pastry pie from the review event too!!
