A restorative eel meal with Dad in Gwangsan
It had been a while since Dad and I had gone out for a nourishing meal, so I looked for a grilled-eel place in Gwangsan and found one selling quality eel at a great-value price. Off we went!

The dedicated parking lot is really spacious, so parking is easy and comfortable 😊
The restaurant is so large that you can spot the Yuil Jangeo sign and find it even from far away!
It is a well-known great-value eel spot in Gwangju, so there are loads of customers and even Tableling waits! If you are visiting with six or more people, you can reserve a private room through Naver Reservation, so keep that in mind 😊 The rooms are very spacious and clean too ⚡️
Choose and pay for your eel first
At Yuil Jangeo, you choose your eel and pay for it before taking a seat. You can pick eel portions for 2 people, 3–4 people, or 5–6 people!

First, they set up the charcoal fire.
The banchan (Korean side dishes) spread is good too.
For anything you need more of, there is a self-service bar, which is super convenient ~

Hurry up and cook 🩷 It looks plump and so appetizing, right?
Grill the outside until beautifully golden and it has an incredible crisp texture. The flesh is thick and plump, with such a satisfying bite—really good. The dipping sauce was sweet and savory, and went perfectly with the eel!
Dip it generously in sauce, wrap it with ginger, and you just keep reaching for more.
Even with just pickled onion and ginger on top, a gentle charcoal aroma and nuttiness come through more and more as you chew!
A hearty finish with eel soup
The eel soup for dessert was savory, with a rich broth that was perfect for mixing with rice 😊 The eel's nutty flavor had steeped deeply into the broth, giving it a thick, deep taste ~ Rice stirred into that hot soup made for the perfect finale.
You can pack up leftover eel to go, but we did not leave any behind.
We wrapped up neatly with coffee for dessert too 🩷 I recommend Yuil Jangeo to anyone looking in Gwangju for great-value eel, with a clean taste and none of that earthy smell.
