Gwangsan eel soup restaurant, whole-cut eel at 3pm: Yuil Jangeo
In short
Yuil Jangeo is an eel restaurant with its own fish counter on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Arriving at 3pm after a family swimming trip meant missing the lunch special eel course served from 11am to 2pm, so the order was the eel-packed eel soup at 9,900 won, made with big whole-cut pieces of eel rather than ground eel, in a clear and generous broth. What kind of place is Yuil Jangeo?
Yuil Jangeo is an eel specialty restaurant on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. It runs on a direct-sale wholesale system for eel, which means both the grilled dishes and the soup come at cheaper prices.

A restorative meal after a day at the water
Hello, this is Mochi Mom! With the weather so brutally hot lately, a lot of you must be heading out for some water fun, right? My family recently had a blast at a swimming spot too. To recover our energy after all that splashing around and give everyone a proper boost, we headed to an eel specialty restaurant in Donggok.

Today I'm introducing 'Yuil Jangeo,' located in Donggok, Gwangsan-gu. I got to try a rich, hearty eel soup made from eel — a premium recovery ingredient — at a ridiculously good price, and I just had to tell you all about it!
Parking and interior: does Yuil Jangeo work for groups?
Yuil Jangeo has an incredibly spacious parking lot. That was actually the first thing I loved the moment we arrived. There's so much room that even if several cars show up at once, there's zero worry about parking — even nervous new drivers can come here with ease.

The interior was also very spacious and kept impressively clean. There's a nicely arranged private room space too, for a more intimate meal. With easy parking and a large dining area, it's ideal for group gatherings or company dinners. I thought it would also be a perfect spot for the staff at the nearby Donggok Agricultural Cooperative to hold their team dinners.

The fish counter system and takeout or delivery discounts
Because Yuil Jangeo sells eel at wholesale prices, the grilled eel here is also very affordable.

If you want grilled eel, you pick out the eel you want at the fish counter and pay there, and they'll pre-grill it deliciously and bring it to your table.

At the fish counter, they thoughtfully separate portions into servings for 2, 3, or 4 people so customers can easily judge the amount — it looked really convenient to pick from.

On top of that, there are discounts for takeout and delivery orders too!
- Trimmed eel: 10% off
- Pre-grilled eel: 5% off
Arriving at 3pm: the lunch special eel course was over
We got to the restaurant around 3pm. Yuil Jangeo's signature menu is the 'eel course' (seasoned grilled eel + eel soup + side dishes) — honestly, that's what I came here hoping to try! But unfortunately it's only available as a lunch special (11am–2pm), so we ordered the eel-packed eel soup for ₩9,900 instead!
What side dishes come with the meal
The basic side dishes were a clean, well-chosen lineup of exactly what you need: stir-fried seaweed stem, stir-fried bean sprouts, napa cabbage kimchi, seokbakji (radish kimchi), and green onion kimchi.
< A perfect match with kimchi > The green onion kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) here are truly a work of art. Mixing rice into the eel soup and pairing it with the green onion kimchi or kkakdugi sends the savory flavor through the roof — you can't stop reaching for your spoon.
< Focus on the perilla seeds! > I highly recommend piling on the ground perilla seeds provided on the table! The broth becomes much nuttier and gains a whole new depth of flavor, letting you enjoy it as an even richer, heartier dish.
The 9,900-won eel soup, made with whole-cut eel
So we ordered the eel-packed eel soup (₩9,900), thinking of it as both a recovery meal and a regular lunch. In this era of high prices, it was honestly hard to believe that a bowl of hearty food loaded with a premium ingredient like eel could cost under ₩10,000. I picked it without hesitation, thinking, 'This is a must-eat for the value.'

When I first saw the eel soup arrive piping hot in a stone pot, I worried the portion might be small given the price — but that wasn't the case at all!

The portion was very generous, and more than that, the style was unique. Most other places grind the eel down and serve it like chueotang (loach soup), but here they cut the eel into thick pieces and left it almost whole!
Seeing the eel right there with my own eyes made the whole bowl feel that much more filling. The broth had absolutely no muddiness — it was clean, clear, and refreshing. Mixing in rice made everything warm up inside, and it truly felt like a proper recovery meal.
Final thoughts on Yuil Jangeo
Value, flavor, friendliness, and a spacious, comfortable dining room — 'Yuil Jangeo' in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, delivered on every front! If you need a recovery meal after a summer swim, a hearty meal with family, or a spot for a group gathering, I highly recommend paying a visit!
