Jongno 3-ga bakery for a wedding gift: injeolmi & mugwort buns, Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a takeout-only bakery in Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, at the entrance of Seopimat-gil alley near Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7, best known for its garlic bread topped with plenty of garlic sauce. As a wedding gift for a friend couple, the writer picked injeolmi (roasted soybean powder rice cake) buns and mugwort rice cake buns for a friend with old-fashioned tastes, waited about 20 minutes even at weekend opening, and tried the 6,800 won garlic bread at home. With neat packaging for gifts and garlic bread that is a treat after 10 seconds in the microwave, Munhwa Bakery is a regular stop worth returning to.

What kind of bakery is Munhwa Bakery?

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a bakery in Jongno 3-ga, best known for its "seasoning bomb" garlic bread, drenched in garlic sauce. It's famous enough to be named one of Seoul's top three bakeries, so a lot of you probably know it already. I stop by every time I go to Jongno, and the other breads are just as good, so I keep coming back. My mother-in-law works in Jongno and loves it too, buying from here often, which makes me like the place even more. This time a friend couple was getting married, so I dropped by to pick up a congratulations gift.

How to get to Munhwa Bakery from Jongno 3-ga Station

Leave Jongno 3-ga Station by Exit 7 and walk about 200m toward Changdeokgung, roughly 2 minutes. The red wooden facade topped with a tiled roof stands out from far away, and it's at the entrance of Seopimat-gil alley, so it was easy to find.

How long is the weekend wait at Munhwa Bakery?

There's a wait even if you arrive right at weekend opening. I did, and the line was still pretty long, so I waited about 20 minutes. A sign at the entrance says, "The shop is small, so please enter two groups at a time." Weekends tend to have a line from the moment it opens, so if you hate waiting, come on a weekday after lunch and you can choose in relative peace.

How ordering works at Munhwa Bakery

The shop is takeout only: you tell the staff which breads you want and they pack them right away. Behind the display I could see metal racks of freshly baked bread, and the smell of baking filled the whole shop.

Inside, the display is piled high with bread, and choosing is half the fun, so I spent the wait deciding.

Injeolmi and mugwort rice cake buns as a wedding gift

For the wedding gift I packed Munhwa Bakery's injeolmi bun (₩3,800) and mugwort rice cake bun (₩5,700). My friend has a grandma's taste in food, so I figured this combo would hit the spot. The onion bagel stuffed with thick cream cheese and the coffee bread, whose size alone is something, are popular too. Lots of foreign customers come here, so each bread's name tag also has English.

Why my sibling swapped the cheese bun for garlic bread

While we waited, my younger sibling kept saying they wanted the cheese bun, then saw the signature garlic bread and changed their mind. The look of it is unfair, honestly. The surface is glossy with garlic butter sauce, and it runs through the slits and pools all the way down on the tray.

They prepare the bread right there once you order, and I wanted to grab one and eat it on the spot.

How my friend liked the Munhwa Bakery gift

I bought the gift bread in a great mood and gave it to my friend, who loved it. They said they'd known about Munhwa Bakery but never tried it because of the constant line, and they were so happy that I felt glad I'd chosen it.

What does Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread taste like?

Back home, I opened the garlic bread from Munhwa Bakery. I already know the taste, so I was super excited.

Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread is a sweet-and-salty garlic bread, chewy outside and moist inside from soaking up the sauce. Take a bite and the sauce on the outside is lightly baked like caramel, so it's chewy. The inside soaks up the sauce and is moist, beyond moist. First the nutty butter aroma spreads and makes you happy, then the sharpness of minced garlic rises faintly. But the garlic isn't spicy or harsh; it tastes sweetly simmered, so the aftertaste is really sweet.

The sweet-salty balance is just right, and I finished a whole one in one sitting in no time. It's quite big too, so ₩6,800 doesn't feel like a waste.

How to reheat Munhwa Bakery garlic bread

Microwave Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread for just 10 seconds and the sauce melts again, bringing back that fresh-from-the-oven taste, so I definitely recommend heating it.

Is Munhwa Bakery worth going back to?

Every time I go I buy a bunch, because the bread is really that good, so if you're visiting Jongno I recommend everyone try it. The packaging is neat, so it works perfectly as a gift, and the taste is something people of any age and gender will like.
