Yeonnam-dong wine date restaurant, oat risotto: Hôtel de Couture
In short
Hôtel de Couture (오뗄드꾸뜨) is a Western restaurant with a small-town European feel on Donggyo-ro 46-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. In a dining room playing nostalgic pop songs, the meal at Hôtel de Couture was a jambon truffle cream risotto made with oats, a pea basil shrimp pasta with hollow noodles, and egg in hell, paired with red and white wine. For a quiet, European-style wine date in Yeonnam-dong, Hôtel de Couture is a good fit.

If you want a European small-town date in Yeonnam-dong, you have to come here. Today I'm giving you my honest review of Hôtel de Couture (오뗄드꾸뜨) in Yeonnam-dong.

What's the atmosphere like at Hôtel de Couture? Why it feels different from the entrance
Hôtel de Couture isn't flashy or showy. It's a Western-style restaurant in Yeonnam-dong that feels like a small restaurant in an alley of some European town. Sure, Yeonnam-dong has plenty of great Western restaurants. But this place has a mood you pick up the moment you walk through the door.

Add the oldies playing inside the restaurant, and the atmosphere was already perfect.

What we ordered at Hôtel de Couture
Here's what we ordered at Hôtel de Couture that day. I'll go through them one by one.
- Jambon truffle cream risotto
- Pea basil shrimp pasta
- Egg in hell
- Red wine and white wine

Jambon truffle cream risotto: fresh, chewy oats
The jambon truffle cream risotto at Hôtel de Couture uses oats instead of rice, cooked slightly al dente so the chew stays alive. It was the first dish I tried, and from the first spoonful it was thick and nutty at the same time. This is a different breed from an ordinary risotto.

What impressed me most was the oats. I'd never had oat risotto before, and cooked slightly al dente, the texture was really good. It wasn't just soft; it had a chew to it.

The jambon (Korean-style ham) was really good too, but hold on. What happens when that jambon meets wine is something you have to experience yourself. One sip of wine, one spoonful of risotto, and you'll understand why this is recommended as a date course.

Pea basil shrimp pasta: the noodles are different too
The pea basil shrimp pasta at Hôtel de Couture uses noodles with a hole through the middle, so the basil sauce fills them all the way inside, and it was the real highlight of the day. Just look at it. The presentation alone is something.

The first thing that caught my eye was the pasta itself. It wasn't a regular noodle but one with a hole running through the center, and because of that hole the sauce fills the noodle to the inside. That feeling of basil sauce bursting across your mouth with every bite, words don't quite do it justice.

Pasta with peas was a first for me too, and the pairing with the basil sauce worked far better than I expected, which surprised me. With the plump shrimp added, the balance of texture and flavor was perfect.

What is egg in hell? European home cooking, pure and simple
The egg in hell at Hôtel de Couture is a rich tomato stew topped with a soft-cooked egg, served with bread topped with a slice of cheese. It was our third order; the name was unfamiliar and the look was new to me, so I was curious and ordered it.

A soft-cooked egg sits on top of a rich tomato stew, and the bread with a slice of cheese comes alongside. The key is to dunk that bread deep into the stew.

As the runny yolk mixes into the tomato stew, it adds a deep flavor. It really felt like European home cooking transplanted as is.

It was a new dish for me, but it ended up as one of the most memorable. (The bread was so good too!)

Who I recommend Hôtel de Couture to
If you prefer a quiet, European-style restaurant full of small-town charm over a flashy, trendy vibe, I'd recommend Hôtel de Couture without hesitation.

If you're wondering where to go for a Yeonnam-dong date, I strongly recommend Hôtel de Couture.
