Today I went looking for a good place to eat in Yeonnam-dong and ended up at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam! Yeonnam-dong has so many great restaurants, but this time I wasn't in the mood for pasta or brunch — I wanted a real Japanese rice bowl.
Jongno Donburi apparently started in summer 2010, in a narrow back alley in Jongno. They say they've been preparing good ingredients every morning and sticking to a same-day-sale rule to make each bowl of donburi (Japanese rice bowl). I was curious because this donburi specialist, born in Jongno, had newly set up shop in Yeonnam. The store intro also mentioned they wanted to bring the same warmth they received in Jongno to the new Yeonnam location, which made me even more excited. 👀

Where is Jongno Donburi Yeonnam, and how far is it from Hongik Univ. Station?
🤍Found in a Yeonnam-dong alley
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam sits tucked inside a Yeonnam-dong alley. It's walkable from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, so accessibility is pretty decent! It's a good spot to stop by for a meal during a Yeonnam-dong date, or whenever you want a solid meal near Hongik Univ. Station. 📍
What is the interior of Jongno Donburi Yeonnam like?
🤎Clean and cozy interior
The inside of Jongno Donburi Yeonnam had a clean, cozy atmosphere. It wasn't a heavy or overly formal Japanese restaurant vibe — more of a place you can eat comfortably, which I liked. It also matched the general feel of Yeonnam-dong quite well 💕💕💕💕

It's a good place to visit with a friend at lunchtime, and works well as part of a Yeonnam-dong restaurant date course!

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam menu and what was ordered
📋The menu
True to its name, Jongno Donburi Yeonnam has a wide range of donburi options. From sake-don to katsu-don to tendon, there were plenty of choices, which made picking half the fun :)
To try a few different things, I ordered
- ✔️Mix katsu-don
- ✔️Tendon
- And added an onsen tamago (soft-poached egg) to the tendon❤️
Both are rice-based dishes, so it was the perfect combo when you want a filling meal.

When you order, water, simple side dishes, and soup all come out neatly.

And finally, the dishes arrived. Visual pass right away! The tendon really looked photo-worthy 📸 hahahaha

How was the mix katsu-don?
🍚Mix katsu-don
Katsu-don is a combo of pork cutlet and rice, so it's hard to go wrong — and Jongno Donburi's mix katsu-don came with several toppings together, making it look even more generous.
Eating the crispy fried cutlet together with rice made for a filling meal. Cutlet alone can be a bit greasy, but with rice it wasn't heavy at all, and the sauce paired well with the rice.

Best of all, one bowl filled you up pretty well, making it a great lunch option. If you like rice, this kind of rice bowl dish tends to be surprisingly satisfying 👍🏼

Was the tempura on the tendon crispy?
🍤Crispy tendon
And the tendon I'd been looking forward to! Tendon needs a generous pile of tempura to really be fun to eat, and this one looked delicious just from the visuals.
The tempura batter had a crisp texture, and eating it with rice added a savory, salty flavor that kept me reaching for more spoonfuls ✨✨✨

Eating the sauce-soaked rice together with the tempura was tastier than eating them separately. Tendon can get greasy quickly because of the tempura, but pairing it with the side dishes in between made it easier to enjoy without feeling heavy. 😋
Is the onsen tamago add-on on the tendon worth it?
🥚Adding onsen tamago is recommended!
I added onsen tamago to the tendon. I personally like the tendon-plus-onsen-tamago combo, so I added it without hesitation — popping the soft yolk and mixing it lightly into the tempura and rice added an even softer flavor.
The crispy tempura combined with the soft yolk changed up the texture, and the savoriness felt even more alive when eaten with rice! If you're ordering tendon, I'd recommend trying it with onsen tamago added. 😊
