Dongtan Chinese restaurant jajangmyeon and extra rice bowl: Bultina

In short

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a cockle jjamppong Chinese restaurant on Nojak-ro by Dongtan Namgwangjang in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Instead of the signature jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), the order was jajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) and a small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), plus an extra bowl of rice so the leftover jajang sauce would not go to waste, and the crisp-edged tangsuyuk was the best part of the meal. Next visit, the cockle jjamppong at Bultina goes on the table too.

Lately I keep finding myself craving Chinese food when I'm out looking for somewhere to eat. This time I wasn't after anything fancy — just a good jajangmyeon and crispy tangsuyuk — so I headed to Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong at Dongtan Namgwangjang.

This branch is best known for its jjamppong, but this time I skipped it and ordered jajangmyeon along with a small tangsuyuk instead.

Ordering jajangmyeon at this Dongtan Namgwangjang Chinese restaurant

What I ordered at Bultina that day: ✔️ jajangmyeon ✔️ small tangsuyuk. Honestly, jajangmyeon is such a common dish that I wasn't expecting much, but the first bite was better than I thought — quite satisfying. The jajang sauce coated the noodles so well that I ended up slurping them down one after another. And you know how, once you've finished the noodles, there's always that little bit of leftover jajang sauce that feels like such a waste? Well, that day I ended up adding a bowl of rice to deal with it, haha.

Mixing the rice into the leftover jajang sauce is delicious, but I actually ate the rice by dipping it into the sauce bit by bit, and that turned out to be a nice change too. So in the end, a trip meant just for jajangmyeon turned into adding a bowl of rice and wiping the sauce completely clean.

✔️ They also have baby chairs, which is really convenient for anyone visiting with a little one like us!

The small tangsuyuk was better than expected

And the dish I was most satisfied with that day was actually the tangsuyuk at Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong. I ordered the small size, and the moment it arrived, I loved how freshly fried and crispy it looked. When I eat tangsuyuk, it's always a bit disappointing if the batter is too thick or goes soggy compared to the meat, but this time the outside was properly crispy, and the texture was great. That crunch held up bite after bite, and it paired really well with the jajangmyeon.

The small size of tangsuyuk was just right for two people to share with the jajangmyeon without feeling like too much — and honestly, if I'd only had the jajangmyeon, it would have felt like something was missing. Ordering the tangsuyuk alongside it turned out to be the right call.

✌🏻✨ You know you have to mix the tangsuyuk with the sauce that comes with it, and then make an extra dipping sauce out of vinegar + soy sauce + red pepper flakes for one more round — that's when it's really good, right?!!

Especially — one bite of jajangmyeon, then a piece of tangsuyuk, and suddenly I wanted the jajangmyeon again; then after the tangsuyuk, dipping rice into the jajang sauce again — I just couldn't stop reaching for more.

Next time: the signature cockle jjamppong at Bultina

As the name suggests, Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong's signature dish is the jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), so if I visit again I definitely want to try it!! The store's own info does list kkomak (cockle) jjamppong as its representative menu, and it seems to be a place a lot of people seek out as a go-to jjamppong spot in Dongtan. This time I had jajangmyeon and tangsuyuk, and it was more satisfying than I expected, so next time I'm planning to order the jjamppong too. Personally, what stuck with me most from this meal was adding rice because I didn't want to waste the leftover jajang sauce after finishing the jajangmyeon, and how crispy the tangsuyuk was.

I really do think a Chinese restaurant meal feels more complete with tangsuyuk alongside the jajangmyeon rather than jajangmyeon alone. If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant or a go-to jjamppong spot around Dongtan Namgwangjang, this place is worth a stop. If you're a jajangmyeon fan like me, try the jajangmyeon-and-tangsuyuk combo. And I'd also recommend adding a bowl of rice for the leftover jajang sauce 🤭 I enjoyed this meal so much that next time I want to try their signature jjamppong too.

If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant near Dongtan Namgwangjang and craving jajangmyeon with tangsuyuk, keep Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Namgwangjang Branch in mind 🍜 The leftover jajang sauce was so good I added a bowl of rice, and the tangsuyuk was crispy. This place is good at everything — I'll be back for the jjamppong.
