Post-workout shabu restaurant in Byeollae, sujebi swap: Onjeongban

In short

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specialising in shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) in Byeollae-dong, Namyangju, at the foot of Bulamsan. After a weekend workout, the writer ordered the 19,000 won Onjeongban set of shabu-shabu, suyuk (boiled pork) and boneless monkfish stew, swapped the kalguksu for sujebi (hand-torn dough soup), and enjoyed unlimited gondeure (Korean thistle) rice, a porridge finish and slush for dessert. With easy parking and a pleasant dining room, Onjeongban is a good-value shabu-shabu spot worth returning to in Byeollae.

Lately I've been eating shabu-shabu as a healthy meal after my weekend workouts. This time I went to Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu (온정반샤브칼국수) Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch, a well-known spot in Byeollae.

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Byeollae: location and opening hours

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch is at 14 Siksong 1-ro, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, and is open daily 10:30–21:30 (last order 20:30). Takeout, delivery, reservations and parking are all available.

The exterior was very tidy, and the quiet location felt peaceful. Bulamsan (Bulam Mountain) is right behind it, so it's a great shabu-shabu stop after coming down from a hike.

Parking lot beside Onjeongban Byeollae Main Branch

There's a parking lot right beside the restaurant, so it's convenient if you come by car. It seems especially good for families or group gatherings.

Inside Onjeongban Byeollae: is there a private group room?

The ceilings are high, the tables are well spaced, and there's a private group room at the back with a door that closes. I arrived right at opening so I could take photos in peace, and there were lots of tables. The owner must be a neat person, because the inside felt really clean and pleasant.

It's big enough for a family meal, a lunch get-together or even a company dinner in Byeollae. The back room's door can be shut, so it looks fine for a quiet gathering or a family birthday too.

At the entrance they've set out coffee, slush and puffed-grain snacks, so dessert is covered in one stop. You hardly see places selling slush these days, and a cold one after shabu-shabu makes me so happy.. ✨ The owner has great taste!!!!!

Onjeongban menu, prices and set options

The main dish at Onjeongban is its shabu-shabu, and you can build a set with rolled dumplings, monkfish stew, suyuk (boiled pork) or Algon-i seafood stew (steamed with fish roe). Ordering shabu-shabu includes kalguksu noodles and porridge.

What makes it a Byeollae restaurant worth recognizing: the gondeure rice (thistle-herb rice) is unlimited ✨

What's at the Onjeongban self-serve bar?

At the self-serve bar you can help yourself to as much geotjeori (fresh kimchi), salad, extra broth, gondeure rice and white rice as you like.

Shabu-shabu is ₩11,000, and with kalguksu, porridge and gondeure rice on top, it's honestly the best value in Byeollae. (*On every menu item, kalguksu can be swapped for sujebi.)

Spoon the seasoning sauce over freshly made gondeure rice, then add perilla oil or sesame oil to taste, and you're done!

How is the shabu, suyuk and monkfish stew set (19,000 won)?

I ordered the Onjeongban shabu set (₩19,000), which gives you shabu-shabu, suyuk and boneless monkfish stew all at once. It came with a generous pile of vegetables like assorted mushrooms, minari (water dropwort), bok choy and napa cabbage, plus meat, and sujebi, which I chose instead of kalguksu.

While the shabu-shabu boils, head to the self-serve bar and get your gondeure rice and the sweet chili sauce ready. Perfect timing.

The suyuk (boiled pork) in the Onjeongban set

The suyuk in the set was tender too, with a nice balance of fat and lean meat. Maybe because of the suyuk, they sell a really wide range of alcohol. It's a good place to come for a drink with dinner.

Choosing the monkfish stew spice level

For the boneless monkfish stew you can choose regular or spicy (about Shin Ramyun level), which was great for a spice wimp like me. It wasn't spicy at all, just slightly hot with a savory sauce, and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it tasted like a monkfish specialist. It goes especially well with the gondeure rice.

Finishing the shabu-shabu with porridge

I spooned the leftover broth, deeper and richer after simmering, onto a plate and started my "K-dessert." After gondeure rice, monkfish stew, suyuk and shabu-shabu I thought I couldn't eat more, but I couldn't leave it, so I thought, let's just try, and made the porridge,, from kalguksu to porridge, every step at this Bulamsan restaurant is perfect.. It's so good ㅠ

Slush dessert and final verdict on Onjeongban

To finish, I mixed cold papaya and mango slush and left with puffed corn and snacks in hand. The slush was especially good, so please visit in summer.

Fresh, generous vegetables, kalguksu and porridge: the value for the price is great. With the gondeure rice and the coffee and slush at the end, it was simply the best-value spot in Byeollae. Parking is easy and the inside is pleasant, so I'll probably come to Onjeongban often whenever I want shabu-shabu in Byeollae.
