Rainy-day sundaeguk feast for three, 37,500 won in Gangnam: Sinju Okmi

In short

Sinju Okmi Gangnam Branch is a 24-hour sundaeguk (pork and blood sausage soup) restaurant halfway between Yeoksam Station and Gangnam Station in Seoul. On a rainy day the writer ordered three dishes for 37,500 won in total: the Master's Sundaeguk with boiled pork set at 14,500 won, the sanghwang mushroom Master's Sundaeguk at 12,000 won, and the sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap at 11,000 won, and every earthenware bowl was scraped clean. The pork tasted fresh with no gamey smell and the broth never turned heavy, making Sinju Okmi a solid rainy-day comfort meal.

It's raining haha, must mean it's really autumn now, right? On slightly cooler days like this, all I can think about is hot soup — is that just me? I went to a sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) restaurant near Yeoksam Station that's become a rising Gangnam 24-hour favorite ♥️

It's roughly halfway between Yeoksam and Gangnam stations, so the location is great — it wins over office workers at weekday lunch and drinkers at night. And on top of that, it's open 24 hours, every day!

Inside the restaurant and what's on the self-bar

The Sinju Okmi Gangnam Branch space is big, clean, and stylishly decorated. The staff greeted us kindly too.

The owner, who runs the second generation of Sinju Okmi, was named a 'Master of Korean Food' in the sundaeguk category. It's also a Blue Ribbon-recognized restaurant!

Perilla powder, salted shrimp, chojang, and pepper on the table

Every table has perilla powder, salted shrimp, chojang (vinegar chili sauce), and pepper. And instead of plain water, they serve heotgae tea (Hovenia dulcis tea), which is good for you and tasty too — that made me happy ♥️

They brought out the basic side dishes, and the kimchi, gukbap's best friend, was delicious too.

This place's strength is the self-bar — you can help yourself as much as you like, which makes the gukbap experience even richer.

Three bowls ordered on a rainy day, 37,500 won in total

At Sinju Okmi Gangnam Branch we ordered the Master's Sundaeguk with Boiled Pork Set at 14,500 won base, Sanghwang Master's Sundaeguk at 12,000 won base, and Sticky Rice Nurungji Pork Gukbap at 11,000 won, for 37,500 won total. Each of us ordered according to our own taste.

The restaurant aims for true old-school sundaeguk made with pork boiled fresh in-house. They use domestic pork slaughtered that same day, boiled four times daily — at 10am, noon, 4pm, and 6pm — so fresh pork comes out four times a day.

This is the suyuk (boiled pork) that comes with the set. Few places boil pork multiple times a day in-house, so you can really taste authentic suyuk here. Definitely order the set menu ♥️

They use good rice too, so it's glossy and shiny. Adding the boiled somyeon noodles from the self-bar makes it a real treat.

Sanghwang mushroom Master's Sundaeguk, 12,000 won

This is a health-boosting sundaeguk made with premium sanghwang mushroom for anyone needing a pick-me-up or a recharge — the precious sanghwang mushroom powder makes the broth extra rich.

Korean pork in the open-flame toremi nurungji gukbap

This is a health-boosting gukbap made with open-flame toremi (broth-pouring) cooking, domestic Korean pork, and sticky rice nurungji (scorched rice) — and it was quite the special dish. I topped it with kkakdugi (radish kimchi) and mu-saengchae (seasoned radish salad) and enjoyed it in different ways. This place is really charming.

Is Sinju Okmi worth a rainy-day trip?

I was full, but I kept eating anyway — this place is scary in how it makes you see the bottom of the bowl. The meat really is plentiful and hearty, and it's fresh with absolutely no gamey smell. The broth isn't too heavy or greasy either, so it's a flavor almost anyone would like. Even foreign visitors gave it a thumbs up haha.

I made the best possible menu choice for a rainy day. Give myself a pat on the back haha.
