No-break-time sundaeguk restaurant in Yeoksam, Seoul: Sinju Okmi

In short

Sinju Okmi Gangnam Branch is a 24-hour sundaeguk (pork and blood sausage soup) restaurant a 7-minute walk from Exit 3 of Yeoksam Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Because Sinju Okmi has no break time, a mid-afternoon visit was possible, and the special spicy bracken master's sundaeguk (12,000 won) came with a potato pancake; the broth was deep and warming rather than harshly hot, and the handmade sundae was packed with filling instead of glass noodles, closer to a homemade sausage. Even diners who normally prefer clear broth will find this spicy bowl a satisfying hangover cure.

One of my favorite dishes is haejangguk (hangover soup). There's nothing like it served bubbling hot in a stone bowl, right? I had a really satisfying lunch-slash-dinner at [Sinju Okmi], a 24-hour sundaeguk spot near Yeoksam Station and Gangnam Station. I wasn't even that hungry, but the moment the food arrived I dug in like I was starving, haha. Let's get into the review.

Where is Sinju Okmi Gangnam Branch, and how do you get there from Yeoksam Station?

Inside Sinju Okmi: hanok-style interior and group tables

The place is huge, and really clean and comfortable! Roof tiles and brick decorate different corners, giving it a traditional Korean house feel while still keeping a nice atmosphere. There's also a long row of seats behind a blind. It seems like a great spot for group gatherings or company dinners. There's no break-time here, and even at that odd hour there were quite a few customers — that probably says something about how good the food is!

What's on the self-serve bar and the side dishes?

Basic side dishes including radish salad and kkakdugi

The basic side dishes were seasoned radish salad, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), crunchy green peppers, doenjang (soybean paste), and raw onion, plus extra raw garlic and chives at the self-serve bar — all generously set out. The radish salad and kkakdugi were nicely fermented and tangy. And the doenjang was so good I ended up eating a lot of peppers with it.

Special spicy bracken sundaeguk, 12,000 won: how was the broth?

Special spicy bracken master's sundaeguk served in a stone bowl

I usually prefer clear broths, but it had been a while since I had a really spicy red-broth soup. This one is genuinely delicious!!! The broth is super rich, and it's not just spicy — it's deep, deeply spicy in the best way!!

Bracken pieces in the spicy red broth
A spoonful of sundaeguk with bracken scooped out

They say bracken is "beef from the mountains"! It was soft yet chewy, with a great texture, and the portion was huge!!! The combination of spicy broth and bracken gave it a bit of a yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) feel — really delicious. Even though I wasn't that hungry, it was a satisfying soup that completely opened up my appetite!!!

Handmade sundae at Sinju Okmi, not the glass-noodle kind

And above all, the handmade sundae (Korean blood sausage) is the real star!!! It's not the glass-noodle kind you find at snack shops — it's genuinely packed with filling!!! It felt more like eating a handmade sausage. Juicy, with a chewy texture and great flavor. Everything was handmade, and it was genuinely delicious!!! There was also a generous amount of pork from various cuts!!!

Spicy broth eaten plain, without any added seasoning

I ate it exactly as served, without adding any extra seasoning or perilla seeds — and the broth was seriously!!!! delicious!!! Great as a hangover soup, great with a drink as a side dish, and just really hearty, which made the whole bowl even more satisfying.

Potato pancake side dish: crisp, almost deep-fried

This isn't the ground-potato style pancake — it's a shredded potato pancake. It's thinly sliced potato formed into a thin, round pancake, cooked almost like it's deep-fried, so it's incredibly crispy!!! The texture is insane!!!!

Cut into bite-sized pieces and dipped in the soy sauce that came with it — the sweet-and-tangy soy dipping sauce was really good. The pancake itself isn't heavily seasoned, so it tastes clean and light, which also makes it a good side dish for kids. The edges are crispy while the center is chewy. Really delicious!!!

Final verdict: Sinju Okmi Gangnam Branch for solo diners

A full table setting with sundaeguk and potato pancake together

The special spicy bracken hangover soup is genuinely delicious!!! Even I, who usually prefers clear broths, was satisfied. [Sinju Okmi Gangnam Branch], which was also great for a solo lunch, is a 24-hour sundaeguk spot near Yeoksam Station and Gangnam Station that I'd strongly recommend!!!
